Office for School Performance: October 2022, Vol. 62
Message from Audrea
The school year is off and running and it is feeling like a more typical school year for sure. While there are still challenges that we are all facing, there are some amazing things happening in our buildings that are more about building community and relationships and engaging students with impressive instruction and less about the stress of masks, social distancing and classroom closures. The classrooms that I have visited have a clear sense of purpose for students and many of our usual routines and structures are back in action and students are thriving and growing in those spaces.
This past week we were able to hold our first Elementary Leadership Collaboration (Secondary is coming soon!) with our four feeders. It was a small, but mighty group of licensed and administrative staff coming together to support the work and highlight the equity thread around core instruction, social emotional learning and language. As a principal and a teacher, these were some of my favorite days to learn and share with not only my staff but with others throughout our district. What always shines through in these collaborations, whether it be our secondary or elementary teams, is the positive energy and the growth mindset that we have for our students and our staff and how much we learn from each other when we connect, especially back in person! Having that time to really think about how the work can impact our students and ways to best take it back to our schools in a meaningful way is what makes the difference.
Hopefully, we are able to do a few more of these collaborations as the year continues. However, we also know that the lack of substitutes does put a strain on our schools so we are shifting to minimize the impact of professional development that occurs during the day. I would encourage you to take a look at the section below for upcoming professional development opportunities that we are offering outside of the school day. There really are some great ones coming up! Extended contract is available for all of these and we hope to make the time as meaningful as possible and connected to what our buildings are working on in their school improvement plans. If you have any ideas or specific needs, please don’t hesitate in reaching out to anyone on our OSP team. We are here to support you!

CASEL: Self Awareness
“Diversity is not about how we differ. Diversity is about embracing one another’s uniqueness.” —Ola Joseph
Self Awareness was the CASEL core competency that kicked off our Equity and SEL work for the 2022-23 school year. The CASEL definition for Self Awareness is as follows: The abilities to understand one's own emotions, thoughts, and values and how they influence behavior across contexts. This includes capacities to recognize one's strengths and limitations, in the skin we are in and the lived experience we bring to each day, with a well-grounded sense of confidence and purpose through support and connection. Supporting self awareness allows staff (and humans) the opportunity to embrace each other's uniqueness. Two amazing resources have been created to support this competency.

Commemorations: Celebrate Filipino American History Month
Did you know, Filipino Americans are the second-largest Asian-American community in the U.S.? Celebrated in October, Filipino American History Month honors the history, pursuits, accomplishments, and legacy of Filipinos in the United States, whose first recorded presence in the continental United States occurred on October 18, 1587. After years of advocacy by individuals and organizations, in 2009 the United States Congress recognized October as Filipino American History Month.
The year 2022 marks several anniversaries in Filipino American history. The Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS) is pleased to share the Filipino American History Month 2022 theme: “Celebrating Our History and Legacies: 50 Years of Filipino American Studies, 40 Years of the Filipino American National Historical Society (FANHS), and 30 years of Filipino American History Month.” This theme honors the anniversary of several important milestones in the grassroots efforts to uplift Filipino American history,
Please join us and the community in celebrating Filipino American History throughout October and every month.

Multilingual Programs
Migrant Services: We are currently in need to recruit more preschool students who qualify for migrant services. You can help us by referring any family that just came from Mexico or Central America or you find out they work in agriculture.
The Migrant Education Program offers supplemental support and services to eligible children so they can fully access academic content and meet state academic achievement standards and graduation requirements.
Who Qualifies? Children between the ages of 3-21 who have moved with a parent, guardian, or spouse to seek or obtain agricultural, fishery, or forestry labor including meat packing labor or dairy farms within the last three years.
EL Services: We’ve begun to implement K-12 Systematic ELD lessons across the district. Connect with your EL specialists to learn more about this language based curriculum and how you can support the students you serve who qualify for EL services.
DL Services: Our district’s Dual Language Program continues to grow! This year, we welcomed 30 new DL teachers, many of whom are visiting teachers from Mexico and Guatemala! Welcome!
Let’s continue celebrating the contributions of our DLP family this year! Please consider nominating a student, teacher, administrator, parent/caregiver, classified staff and anyone who is doing an exceptional job!
We are also excited to announce the Dual Language Family Summit will be held on Saturday, October 29th from 9 am to 12 pm at South Meadows Middle School. The Summit format will be hybrid, in person and also via Zoom. Please check the Summit Website for updates and help us spread the word! If you would like to present a session, please email tovara@hsd.k12.or.us.

Digital Citizenship Awareness Week is October 17-21, 2022. To celebrate and highlight this learning, our TechTeachGrow team has curated a week’s worth of ready-to-teach lessons to help introduce and strengthen digital citizenship skills in our students at every grade level. These lessons are designed to address six core competencies of digital citizenship: Media Balance & Well-being; Privacy & Security; Digital Footprint & Identity; Relationships & Communication; Cyberbullying, Digital Drama & Hate Speech; and News & Media Literacy. Combining these powerful and engaging lessons with our ongoing Social Emotional Learning work, teachers now have lessons tied to the CASEL framework, highlighting which lessons lend to helping develop self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making.
