CG Enrichment Opportunities

We have a variety of ways for your student(s) to participate in enrichment opportunities at Cypress Grove. Our academic competition teams are some of the most popular ways for students to get involved, meet other students, and represent our campus. We have three competition teams with contests coming up and have streamlined the process for parents to give permission and students to register. Each event below has specific directions. Please read carefully and reach out with any questions!

This year, all students interested in the spelling bee will need a parent to sign the permission form below. This is the same form that Mrs. Cameron is also sending in her monthly family newsletter. Either link will go to the same form. After parents sign the form, a Schoology code will be sent to the email registered in the form, and parents or students will need to add the Spelling Bee Group. You can access all word lists and information regarding this year's spelling bee in this group. There will be a qualifying spelling test on November 9 during advisory. Any student wanting to be in the spelling bee must complete this qualifying test. We will take the top 30 students who qualify, and they will be invited to the School Spelling Bee hosted on January 18, 2024, in the Cypress Grove Lecture Hall from 4:15 - 5:30.

If you need printed copies of the words to study, please have your student reach out to me through Schoology or by stopping by my room. If you have any questions, please reach out.

We also have academic UIL teams. Practices for these teams will begin in November, and our district meet will be held on February 24, 2024, at Jane Long Intermediate. The UIL competition teams consist of:

• Calculator Skills (6th Grade only)
• Chess Puzzles (5th & 6th Grades)
• Dictionary Skills (5th & 6th Grades)
• Editorial Writing (6th Grade only)
• Impromptu Speaking (6th Grade only)
• Listening Skills (5th & 6th Grades)
• Maps/Charts/Graphs (5th & 6th Grades)
• Mathematics (6th Grade only)
• Modern Oratory (6th Grade only)
• Number Sense (5th & 6th Grades)
• Oral Reading (5th & 6th Grades)
• Ready Writing (5th & 6th Grades)
• Science (6th Grade only)
• Social Studies (5th & 6th Grades)
• Spelling (5th & 6th Grades)

All practices will begin in November and team members will be chosen by January, 2024.

The competition tests for all non-speaking events will be held at Cypress Grove throughout the regular school days from February 6-8, 2024. All speaking events will hold their competitions at Jane Long Intermediate School in Bryan on February 24, 2024. The awards ceremony for all events (speaking and non-speaking) will also be held at Jane Long Intermediate School in Bryan on February 24, 2024.

Students who are interested in the Math Olympiad team will meet in the lecture hall on Tuesday, October 17, 2023. We will introduce the Math Olympiad program and pass out paper permission slips. This must be signed and returned for your student to participate..
