Teaching Excellence & Bringing Our Schools Together in 2016

January 2016!

Happy New Year!

As we welcome in a new year we can reflect upon and celebrate the positive instructional changes that have taken place in our school district. We are in our second full year of implementation of Readers' Workshop balanced literacy as well that of Eureka guided math. These instructional approaches provide increased rigor and more individualized learning to meet the needs of all learners. We have increased time in learning in mathematics and English language arts and provide enrichment and intervention periods within classroom and building based schedules. We have an articulated literacy assessment plan that allows us to meaningfully examine individual student performance, classroom, and school based trends, and to plan instruction to raise learning at each level. In mathematics we are seeing excellent growth as children are learning to think and to problem solve using multiple strategies, developing a greater conceptual foundation and capacity to understand number relationships. We are also seeing and appreciating family support and positive engagement as we work in partnership to provide the very best education to children within our community. This year, fall 2016, we will open the doors to ACES, Athol Community Elementary School, our beautiful, new state of the art building. We have been busy preparing for this move through our staff development and intensive curriculum work as we join Pleasant Street, Riverbend, and Sanders Street Schools as one new school community. For these reasons, we have much to celebrate as we usher in the year 2016.

Warm regards,

Jan Williams, Principal Riverbend/ Sanders

Dianne Ellis, Principal Pleasant Street

Molly Superchi, Principal Royalston Community School

Need to Know More About Math?

Do you want or need to know more about math terms your child is expected to learn within each grade? You might be surprised at how many there are! Like the Athol Royalston Regional School District, the Lafayette Public Schools in Lousiana also uses Eureka math as their primary math curriculum program. They have a fantastic website for parents and guardians that includes math terms/ vocabulary, activities and helpful tips, resources, and videos by grade, module, and topic area.

We encourage families to use this website with your child to help break down math lessons with step by step guidance.

Having Fun with STEM based learning!

STEM is an acronym for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and it is becoming an increasingly important interdisciplinary field in education as many present day careers as well as anticipated jobs of the future will require such skills.

Third and fourth grade students at Pleasant Street and Riverbend had a nice STEM oriented experience having recently completed a 10 week Mad Science afterschool program that was funded through Title One. We had more students interested in this program than available spots at Pleasant Street so a second program, Monday Science, was made available for additional students who wanted to participate. What this shows us is that students love to learn about science and technology through hands-on activities and experiments as well as through reading non-fiction. We have listed below some websites that you may want to explore with your child. If you try a fun science or technology activity with your child and want to share it with our school community please feel free to send a picture and information and we will be sure to share it in our February newsletter.

We Have Winter Wear & Coats for Those in Need

If your child is in financial need of a coat, hat, or mittens please contact Rachel Schwab, Guidance Counselor at Pleasant Street School and the Royalston Community School or Linda Jaskoviak, Guidance Counselor for Riverbend/ Sanders Street Schools, to let us know your child's first and last name, the size coat that your child needs, and whether your child also needs a hat and mittens. You could also write a note in your child's school Agenda Book, or Homework folder, and your child's teacher will give the note to the guidance counselor.

Celebrate Schools in the Athol Royalston Regional School District

We encourage you to check out the Celebrate Schools Athol Royalston Facebook site! This is a great place to connect with events and activities happening throughout our school district. You do not have to be on Facebook to access this site. If you are on Facebook please "like" what you see or better yet hit the share button so that we can spread the word on the many positive developments within our schools. We very much want to extend our gratitude to Mitchell Grosky, for developing and maintaining this site, for adding and soliciting content, and for his unwavering dedication and commitment to our schools and greater community.
