LCPS School Counseling Newsletter
Special Note from Tony Bauer
I wanted to let all the counselors of LCPS know that I have enjoyed working with you and getting to know you these past two years in my roles of Specialist and Supervisor. These last two years have had plenty of ups and downs, but I will walk away from this job only thinking about the great things we have accomplished together. You are all truly dedicated to your profession and I am honored to have been able to witness all the great things that you do and humbled by what you constantly give to all our students every day.
As you know, I am not leaving this profession, because I believe in it so much. I will still be around to work with many of you and look forward to our interactions in my new capacity. I hope everyone has a great summer…I know I will!! See you all in August!
Tony

Virginia Department of Education New Requirements for School Counselors
DATE: June 9, 2017
TO: Division Superintendents
FROM: Steven R. Staples, Superintendent of Public Instruction
SUBJECT: New Requirements for Initial Licensure and License Renewal
The purpose of this memorandum is to summarize legislation passed by the 2016 and 2017 Virginia General Assemblies that directly impacts individuals applying for an initial license or seeking renewal of a license. To clarify questions received from school divisions and licensees, effective July 1, 2017, please provide verification that all statutory renewal requirements, including those passed in 2016 and 2017, are completed every five years during each renewal period.
You may wish to review Section 22.1-298.1 of the Code of Virginia which sets forth specific statutory requirements for initial licensure and licensure renewal. This Codesection references numerous requirements, including the technology standards for instruction; child abuse recognition and intervention training; and emergency first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, and the use of automated external defibrillators. In addition, please note that: (1) any individual licensed and endorsed to teach middle school civics or economics or high school government or history seeking renewal must complete a module or professional development course specifically related to Virginia history or state and local government; and (2) every teacher seeking aninitial license with an endorsement in the area of career and technical education shall have an industry certification credential in the area in which the teacher seeks endorsement. If a teacher seeking an initial license has not attained an industry certification credential in the area in which the teacher seeks endorsement, the Board may, upon request of the employing school division or educational agency, issue the teacher a provisional license to allow time for the teacher to attain such credential.
Below are details of new requirements effective July 1 and September 1 of this year. Please share this information with your staff.
Below is a link to the memo with links to the new requirements. Please be sure to review all the options to meet the new requirements. There are FREE online options. I am working to get the FREE online options put onto VISION.

Professional Development Conference Requests
If you are interested in attending a conference please contact Office of School Counseling Services first. We will need to check availability of funds before you complete the Request to Attend Conference Form which is available on the Intranet. The link is below:
Once you complete the form, return it to our office. It would be helpful if you could ask your principal to pick up a portion of the cost. Generally we’ll pay registration (if budget allows) and your school can pay additional expenses. We will tell you that we have had a lot of requests and we’re running low on funds, but if Tony can make it work, he will.
Please let us know if you have any questions.
