Second Grade News!!
Second graders hosted this year’s Learner’s Showcase on the evening of April 9th. Our turnout was amazing with almost all of our students participating. Thank you parents! The event was led by the children who navigated their parents through a series of activities. These included creating “place value” flowers, sharing an African animal report and Model Magic figure, reading a magazine they wrote, and the very popular STEM building activity! We are so proud of all our students!
On Friday, May 3rd, the second grade will be going on a field trip to Wachusett Meadow in Princeton to “explore the pond.” Children will scoop and examine the many small creatures that live in a wetland habitat. Through close observation, students will explore how these creatures move, breathe, find food, and defend themselves. Additional information will be sent home soon about what your child should bring and wear.
Our Bookfair is coming up soon!!
What's going on in Technology?
I can’t believe on how fast the school year has gone by. Seems like just yesterday I was showing the 2nd graders how to log onto the computers, but here we are 8 weeks until the end of school.
Each grade are steaming ahead with their lessons and units. Here is a summary of what each grade level is doing at the moment.
5th Grade: Robots
We have begun our Mars Rover Robotics Unit. We have learned about the many different parts of a Lego EV3 kit and are now building our robots.
Within this unit, we will be researching about Mars, stimulating the Mars surface on our competition table, building attachments to perform different jobs, and testing our robots.
4th Grade: Energy
In this unit, we will be learning about the different types of energy, but will be focusing on electrical energy. Once our knowledge is concentrated, then we will engineer series and parallel circuits with everyday items.
Lastly, we will learn about rotational vibration and electrical engineering, where we will build a hands-free drawing robot.
3rd Grade: Weather and Technology
The third graders will learning about weather symbols and how meteorologists use technology to forecast the weather. The students will be researching different states and their capitals, including their weather and designing a forecast that will be presented to their fellow classmates.
2nd Grade: World Postcards
Second grade is learning about the 7 different continents and the animals that live there. After our investigation and recorded research, we will create a postcard using a drawing software.
Note: Donation of stamps would be lovely.
Kindergarten/1st Grade:
What to be an engineer? Well, you first need to know about operational thinking. Using the app called Inventioneers, the first graders are learning about step-by-step progresses and engineering tinkering. In order to complete each level, the students are partnered up and will have to vocalize their steps to solve the problem.
Note: I highly recommend this app.
