Celebrate and Expectations of Your Students
I wanted to share that grades 3-5 saw tremendous growth on ACT ASPIRE. We don't have all scores in due to make up testing this week. Currently based on the data that we have,
the science team saw 54% points of growth,
the math team had 50% points of growth,
and the literacy team had 34% points of growth.
I was curious how that compared to last years growth at this point in the year,
the science team had 33% points of growth,
the math team grew 23% points,
and the literacy team had 25% points of growth on the reading test.
So technically we outgrew last year's growth by 68% points when you combine 3-5 together!!! You guys this is awesome! Even better news than this, we had some of the individual kids that teachers selected to be purposeful with that made benchmark. Some of these are Jasper Murphree, Sam Wakefield, Logan McEntire, Levi Estorga, Zach Johnson, and Matti Dublin!!!! If you have worked with any of these students in the past, know that it took every single one of you using your time and talents to make an impact on these students! We are so proud of them!
With the first semester finished, I need each of you to begin treating your students as the next grade level. For example, kinder students need to be treated as first graders. Our expectations has to be high! All of you are doing great things, but some of you are still doing too much of the work for them. Being in classrooms last week, I heard some of you answer your own questions. It may be awkward, but you have to let them think and grapple with the content. If everything is easy for them, they will not grow. Make sure you are calling on kids at random with random name generators. Some classes I visited last week called on the same kid three times in the 10 minutes I was in the room. Remember the person speaking is the one that is learning. Make sure you are sharing the stage with your students. It should be more student led than last semester.
Be aware of the importance of each day!
- 55 important practices until K-2 Summative MAP (THE BIG GAME)
- 60 important practices until 3rd-4th Summative ACT (THE BIG GAME)
- 65 important practices until 5th Summative ACT (THE BIG GAME)
Hattie's Corner: Success Criteria and Learning Intentions and a Semester of Strategies in Review!
For the month of January, we will focus on Learning Intentions and Success Criteria which is found under teacher clarity with Hattie. Teacher clarity gives almost two years growth in one year. This will sound a lot like goal setting and learning targets. It all goes hand in hand. I will leave these videos on this week's newsletter also. Everyone will use them this week. They will be listed in your lesson plan for this week as Success Criteria... Please remember this is not the content we are teaching. This is a strategy to deliver of content.
The first video explains success criteria by Hattie himself.
The other two videos are examples of this in the classroom. According to the survey in November, you all would like videos of it in action. (The video that is titled word study is not what we see as word study. The video is about students using strong vocabulary in their writing.) The second video is about inferences.
NEW VIDEO THIS WEEK about success criteria is from Global PD. It is less than 2 minutes long. https://globalpd.com/search/content/MTgwOA==
Follow this link for a math video example for success criteria. https://thelearningexchange.ca/videos/put-success-criteria-learning-goals/

IMPORTANT INFO:
Growing English Language Learners of Greenbrier: December 2019 See this link for ideas to assist your English Language Learners.
Please make sure to have lesson plans out on your desk and reading lesson plans on your reading table each day. Your reading plans need to be a week's worth of complete plans that are ready on your first day of instruction. We understand that you may adjust things, but the plans must be thoroughly thought out for the week prior to the week starting.
Bring It On - The Bring it on peer observation system will be explained in team meetings this week. We will have the first classrooms to go see during the week of Jan 20th. Our Guiding Coalition is volunteering themselves for the first couple of weeks. This will help us to work out any kinks we have with our new system! This will be so exciting!
Goal setting - 3-5 review ACT Aspire goals and update data binders. K-2 review MAP goals and update data binders. Make sure to practice cutting down the nets 3-5. K-2 should have done that last week. This needs to be done in the afternoon one day this week so as not to interrupt ACT Aspire makeup testing with the noise.
Read as One Book - This week we are reading chapters 7-8. Make sure to place this on your newsletter each week. Encourage parents to send pictures of their kids reading so we can post on social media.
We need PICTURES to post on social media! Please make sure you send pictures to Mrs. Krogman and myself of all the great things happening in your rooms with a small description of what is happening in the photo. Feel free to have a kid take a few so you will be in some of the photos. We want to brag on all the great things that kids are learning.
SIT INFO:
SIT comments will be for K and 1st grade.
Make sure if you are referring a student to SIT based on Mid year data that you use the Google Form for referring. See link.
