Fulton Science Academy
INNOVATION, EXCELLENCE, CHARACTER
WEEKLY NEWSLETTER - September 5, 2016
A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRINCIPAL
It's been an incredible week at Fulton Science Academy! As our wonderful parent volunteers were working many hours to decorate our lobby and launch our campus-wide "Coins for a Cure" fundraising initiative, a huge 18-wheeler truck rolled into our driveway with a 450 pound gift from one of our incredible families...it was the long-awaited "FSA Mustang" statue!
This incredible statue came to our campus all the way from California. It is already being enjoyed by our FSA family and the children (and faculty) love posing for photos with the mustang. It brings such a wonderful sense of school spirit and we can't thank our generous donors, the Stevens family, enough...not only for the gift of this statue, but for all that you do for our school!
GREAT JOB MATEO!
I would like to personally congratulate one of our second graders, Mateo G. for the amazing work he completed this weekend for our "Coins For A Cure" campaign. Yesterday, Mateo had a lemonade stand where he sold lemonade, cookies and brownies. He raised $168.50 all by himself! We are very proud of you Mateo!!! This is a great success. Thank you!
Other School News...Campus Growth Projections
I am pleased to inform our school community that the first three drafts of our campus master plan have arrived! We are now waiting on additional information from the architects to clarify the details of a school-wide master plan. Within the next few weeks, we will schedule meetings with our students, faculty, and parents to get feedback and suggestions.
As our school experiences significant growth in our enrollment numbers, it is only natural that many of our families and faculty may wonder about our long-range plans. The board has made it very clear that the long-term goal of FSA is to remain small. We do not want to lose the personal attention and family environment that we provide to our precious students.
On the other hand, we also don't want our numbers to be a hinderance to the quality of education we can provide to our student body. For example, if there are four classes in 6th grade, then a 6th grade earth science teacher can only focus on earth science and be the best earth science teacher possible without having to worry about planning for a different science class that applies to another grade.
Similarly, if we are able to have four classes in 3rd grade, then those four teachers could have more meaningful collaboration under the leadership of a third grade team leader teacher.
A managed increase in numbers with a pre-determined ceiling also helps to expand the extracurricular activities we offer. These are the types of considerations we take into account when considering how to maintain the sense of community we all enjoy while maximizing the absolute best educational offerings we can provide to your children.
After careful consideration and planning, our mid-and-long range goals are to embrace a small elementary school, a small middle school, and a small high school where each grade has no more than four classes each. Additionally, our plan is that each class will have no more than 20 students. We believe that this size and scale will allow us to continue to provide the individualized attention our students deserve and a top-notch educational experience that will distinguish Fulton Science Academy as a top private school within the SouthEast region.
To better understand our future growth projections, here is what we anticipate to be the maximum student capacity we would consider in future years. If growth continues beyond these projections, wait lists will be implemented.
Elementary School - Approximately 350 Students
Middle School - Approximately 240 Students
High School - Approximately 240 Students

FSA Quote of the Week
Birthday Treats Bring Smiles Among Students
If you would like to celebrate your son or daughter's birthday, please refer to our Parent/Teacher Handbook for helpful hints and suggestions, and reach out to your student's homeroom teacher to discuss how you would like to recognize this special day. Thank you!
2016-2017 Home Visits Begin
FSA home visits are just one of many ways that we strive to build a strong and lasting partnership between our school and the wonderful families whose children study here. The benefits of home visits are well documented, and offer yet another reason why we enjoy having the opportunity to visit with children and their families outside the school environment.
Benefits of home visits are numerous and have been addressed in many publications, including the The Washington Post.
"Teachers benefit from learning more about their students’ interests and experiences and learning more about parents’ goals for their children. Parents appreciate a teacher meeting them on "their turf" and taking the time to listen to their questions, concerns, hopes, and dreams. As a teacher, I love doing home visits because they show families how much I care about their kids and remind me that every family wants the best for their child."
Setting up an FSA home visit for your child(ren) is easy; simply email junal@fultonscienceacademy.org with some suggested dates/times, as well as your students' name(s) and homeroom assignments. Ms. Unal will be in touch to confirm final details. Thank you to everyone for making this special program such a success!

FSA Campus Beautification Efforts Underway
To support our hardworking students, the Santos family reduced their fees by more than 60%. Dead trees on the property will be removed later this year by a different company who installed them. We also plan to beautify our entrance sign with the addition of some flowers.
We are currently looking for parent volunteers who are interested in helping with some grounds-related issues, including power washing of some areas of our facility, routine weed removal, etc. If you are interested in helping, or know a company that would consider donating this service, please email ksener@fultonscienceacademy.org.
Already, comments from happy parents and faculty are being received. We hope you enjoy the changes!
iPad Music Club Hits a High Note Among Students
The iPad Music Club is off to a great start! Students have been working with several apps on school-owned iPads to create a variety of different styles of music.
Together, working in groups of 2-3 participants, students have been brainstorming, creating songs, and motivating one another to compose/arrange musical works.
So far, students have learned about musical terminology (different beats/styles/timbres/tempos/instruments etc.), expectations, and what makes music so exciting, relaxing, empowering and beautiful.
Every week students, working under the leadership of Mrs. Peacock, are incorporating and re-enforcing new music fundamentals in an "out of the box" learning approach. When asked how things were going, kids said, "We are having a blast!"
Pre-K Class Enjoys Learning About Compound Words
2016- 2017 Student Council Election
It's time to determine the FSAPS Student Council for the 2016-17 school year! Through this process, each homeroom class in grades 4-10 will elect Student Council representatives.
There will potentially be two winners per homeroom. The student with the most votes will most likely (after administrative approval) be the child who will attend the meetings and will relay information to the class. The runner up will assist and potentially replace the other student if necessary.
The one primary representative from each homeroom will need to attend meetings once a week (the day has yet to be determined) at 7:30 a.m.
2016- 2017 Student Council Election Schedule
- Candidates will complete their Student Council application forms and hand them in to their homeroom teacher by September 8th. No late forms will be accepted. The homeroom teachers will notify students of their eligibility on September 9th
September 12 – September 16
- Campaign week for student council candidates. Campaign posters can be hung in the classroom. Students can be creative in their campaigning, but should not interfere with learning time and candy or sugary treats are not to be distributed.
September 15
- Student Council candidates need to turn in a copy of their campaign speech to their homeroom teacher for their approval.
September 19 – September 21
- Each candidate should be given time to share their speeches with their homeroom class. Depending on how many candidates are in the homeroom, the speeches can be given through Wednesday during homeroom class time.
- Following the last speech, the students will vote by secret ballot. Ballots will be collected and counted by homeroom teachers. An announcement of all Student Council winners will be made.
Math Classes Enjoy "Techy Fridays"
FSA brings another dimension to Fridays! Students explore math concepts and practice their mathematical problem solving skills and critical thinking skills through various educational websites and applications.
Quizzizz.com is one of these resources. It has been our students' favorite fun assessment/practice tool lately. It is a multiplayer classroom activity. Students solve assigned problems at their own pace while seeing the ranking of other students. They receive realtime feedback and have a chance to review their answers after they complete their task.
Way to go students! We are so proud of your accomplishments!

Update on Student Email Accounts
This week, FSAPS announced some changes regarding student email addresses.
Middle school students will no longer be able to send or receive e-mails to addresses outside our school domain. Their school-assigned email address will only allow them to send electronic communications to students, faculty, or administrators who share a fultonscienceacademy.org email address.
High school students will be able to send or receive e-mails both inside and outside our school domain. We expect that our high school students will use this priviledge responsibly.
Safety and security are our paramount concerns. Parents are able (and even encouraged) to check your students' e-mail address anytime you wish. Passwords have already been shared with you. You can also ask your student for his/her password. All students are required to share their passwords with their parents.
Please also be advised that our school administration is always able to check student e-mail accounts when asked, or if necessary.
Through these e-mail addresses, students will be able to receive important school-related emails. Examples include our weekly school newsletter, daily announcements, daily FSA Connect e-mails, and communication from their teachers and fellow students in a much faster and more efficient manner.
Every new academic benefit like this one comes with responsibility. We are confident that our students will use these email addresses in a professional manner as they prepare for life and careers that reward hard work, responsibility and personal and professional accountability.
Please let us know if you have any questions, concerns, or comments.
Thank you for all you do to make Fulton Science Academy a success. We appreciate you greatly.
MEDICAL UPDATE
If it is listed on the registration form that your child has asthma or allergies that require a medical device, you are required to provide that device to the front office immediately. All medicines and rescue devices (inhalers, epipens, etc.) will be locked in the administrative area. Students who have written medical orders to carry their devices with them at all times are able to do so, but an updated, 2016-2017 medical form must be on file with our front office.
As per the FSA Student Handbook, in an emergency situation, the school will phone 911 in any situation where we feel a child's health is in danger and professional medical intervention is necessary.
Please email rcondon@fultonscienceacademy.org if you would like a form sent home with your child. Please note all prescribed medicine forms do need to be signed by a physician.
Private Music Lessons Available - Register Now
FSAPS is very happy to offer private music lessons to students, teachers, and members of the administration. Although enrollment can be made throughout the year and fees can be pro-rated, spaces are filled on a first-come, first-served basis and spots are filling quickly. GREAT NEWS! INTRODUCING EARLY MORNING MUSIC AND CODING CLASSES
As part of our ongoing quest to make our school a leading STEAM institution in the region, we have been discussing ways to improve the music and computer/coding programs. We are pleased to report that as part of our school improvement plan for the 2016 - 2017 school year, we will now offer early morning music and coding classes. To best support this new initiative, we have added two additional faculty members to our school. These talented staff members include our new orchestra teacher, Dr. Hawk, and our new computer teacher, Ms. Ertekin.
Early morning classes are offered to students in grades five or higher (on an optional basis) and are held between 7:15 a.m. and 7:55 a.m. Thanks to these early morning classes, students will now have the option to take additional classes in the areas of either band/orchestra and/or coding classes before our regular school day begins. We are proud to offer these optional music and coding classes, as they should give an extra “boost” to our already extensive course curriculum.
Please note that while the music classes are open to any student in 5th grade or higher, the coding classes are only open to students in 6th grade through 8th grade.
Students may choose one day of music and two days of coding classes. These optional classes will begin on Tuesday, August 30, 2016.
REQUIREMENTS FOR THE CLASSES
- Students should be in the classroom no later than 7:15 a.m. Students will not be allowed to enter into classroom after 7:20 a.m. because it would be disruptive to the learning process.
- Please note that the teachers reserve the right to remove any student who misses more than three classes in any semester.
If your child is interested in registering for these optional music and/or coding classes, please CLICK HERE to register.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
BEFORE & AFTER SCHOOL CARE PROGRAM
We value the feedback of our FSA families and, as such, are pleased to announce some changes with our before and after school care, including a new discounted monthly payment plan that we think may interest you.
As you know, fees for our regular before and after school care are as follows:
- Before School Care is available every weekday between 7:00 and 7:30 a.m. for $5 per day
- After School Care is available every weekday between 3:30 and 6:00 p.m. for $15 per day
We will have after school club options for each weekday this year. Those who do not attend a club can stay in after school care beginning at 3:30 p,m. For those who are enrolled in a club, the after school care program will begin at 4:30 p,m.
This year, we are pleased to announce new discounted fees that are associated with payment plan. Those fees are as follows:
- Monthly Payment Plan for Before School Care - $50 per student (A savings of about $50 per month)
- Monthly Payment Plan for After School Care - $200 per student (A savings of about $100 per month)
- Additionally, there will be 10% before and after school care discount for the siblings when they register for the monthly payment plan.
For those students who regularly use before or after school care, we recommend the monthly payment plan to save money. Once you register, you will be sent invoices at the end of each month between the months of August and May. If interested, please visit the link below and submit.
If your family is not interested in a monthly registration, you do not need to do anything. You will be charged, per day, as you use these services.
SCHOOL LUNCH PROGRAM
APPLY NOW FOR YOUR 2017 TAX CREDIT
Dear FSA Families,
We are pleased to announce details surrounding the GA Tax Credit Scholarship Program. Applications to participate are being accepted now, and we hope you will choose to participate.
This program provides an opportunity for taxpayers to redirect Georgia tax dollars and, in turn, provide financial aid assistance to FSA students. We would greatly appreciate it if you would please apply and choose Fulton Science Academy Private School as your designated school.
Please also inform your friends, co-workers, and relatives who live in Georgia; they can also participate and help support our school.
How can this tax credit benefit both Fulton Science Academy Private School and myself?
Under this law, you can redirect a portion of your Georgia income tax to provide financial aid assistance to FSA students based upon need. You will receive a tax credit on your state income taxes and a charitable deduction on your federal incomes taxes for the amount of your contribution. For married couples filing jointly, the maximum tax credit-eligible contribution is $2,500 ($1,000 as an individual).
How do I participate in the program?
It’s easy. All you have to do is complete our easy paperless process, and Apogee will submit the paperwork on your behalf. Apogee will process your approval notice within 30 days. Once the approval notice is received, please send your payment by check or pay online within 60 days of your approval date.
Is there a limit regarding how much I can give each year?
Yes, the amount you can give is limited by your tax filing status:
- Married Filing Jointly: Maximum of $2,500
- Individual Filer: Maximum of $1,000
- Married Filing Separately: Maximum of $1,250
- Individuals who receive pass-through income can contribute up to $10k
- C-Corporation: Up to 75% of GA tax liability
Can I direct my contribution to help a specific student?
Although we understand why it would be ideal to designate specific recipients, this is not possible. Apogee does not accept donations that are allocated for specific individuals. Donors would lose their ability to receive a charitable contribution, as well as the Georgia tax credit.
Apogee is a 501c3 non-profit organization and, as such, is bound first and foremost by the rules and regulations governing this special status. As a 501c3, Apogee is not permitted to accept any donations directed to a specific individual. To do so would put Apogee’s non-profit status in jeopardy and, in turn, its SSO status in jeopardy.
Who or what is Apogee?
Apogee Scholarship Fund is a state registered SSO (Student Scholarship Organization) as well as a 501c3 non-profit organization whose primary functions are to facilitate the process of distributing tax credits in exchange for donations and to disburse those funds for private school tuition scholarships.
"Apogee" (ap-uh-jee) is defined as the highest point (typically of an arc). To this end, Apogee strives to help children reach their highest educational potential.
How do I know what my GA tax liability is?
Your GA tax liability is typically 6% of your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI). You can also look at Line 18 of your GA tax return (Form 500) to learn your GA tax liability.
Why should I give now?
The State has placed a yearly cap on the amount of credit available. That amount is $58 million. That means that every school, every taxpayer, and every corporation in GA is drawing from the exact same pool of credits.
Once the funds are distributed, interested agencies must wait until the following year to participate in the program. Once funds are deposited, they are immediately available to assist families who want the best educational choice for their children.
Please note: The yearly cap is generally met on the very first day of January; we expect this trend to continue until the cap is raised beyond the $58 million. For this reason, it is strongly encouraged that you please submit your application as soon as possible to be considered for approval.
Can I reduce my quarterly estimated tax payments by the amount I donate?
This is a great opportunity to write the check to support education instead of paying that portion of estimated taxes. Please ask your accountant to reduce your quarterly estimated tax payment by the amount of your contribution. This will reduce each of your quarterly payments by 25% of the amount you intend to contribute.
What happens if my donation exceeds my tax liability?
The tax credit is a “non-refundable” credit. This means you cannot receive a refund for any more than your GA tax liability. Any excess credit beyond your tax liability can be carried forward for up to five years.
Do I have to include my check with my donation package when mailing to Apogee?
No. Apogee cannot accept payments prior to January 1. Since the vast majority of applications received are early applications, payment should be made after approval has been secured. Payment must be madewithin 60 days of approval.
What is Apogee's Tax ID Number?
FEIN: 26-2693572
Is this donation a charitable deduction on my Federal return in addition to the credit?
Yes. Because of the 501c3 status, you are eligible to receive a Federal Charitable Deduction for the amount of your contribution. The law does require that you increase your State income by the amount of your Charitable Deduction on your Federal return (donation amount).
Can Apogee help me understand how this credit will affect my specific tax situation?
Yes. Apogee is well versed in the specifics of how this credit affects most tax scenarios and is happy to offer guidance regarding how this credit is related to your specific tax situation.
As always, we also suggest that you please consult your personal tax advisor, as they will have the best understanding of your specific tax situation.
How do I get started?
