HYPE Freedom Schools - Summer Literacy Programs
This summer MBK is partnering with HYPE Freedom Schools to implement the Freedom School model at two sites in the MBK Feeder Areas: Bethany Baptist Church and Wheatley High School/Finnegan Park. Programming for youth Kindergarten through 8th Grade will run Monday-Friday from 9 am - 3 pm.
Freedom Schools implement a curriculum developed by the Children’s Defense Fund. Freedom Schools provide summer and after-school enrichment that helps children fall in love with reading, increase their self-esteem, and generates more positive attitudes toward learning. Freedom Schools provide nurturing learning environments using a model curriculum that supports children and families around five essential components:
1. High quality academic enrichment.
2. Parent and family involvement.
3. Civic engagement and social action.
4. Intergenerational leadership development.
5. Nutrition, health and mental health.

MBK Systems of Care Spotlight
MBK Sr. Counselor Roderick Peoples meets with Fleming Middle School students once a week for Aggression Replacement Training (ART). The curriculum focuses on understanding anger and aggression in youth and identifying ways to combat anger and aggression. The curriculum uses role play, modeling and performance feedback from the students. Mr. Peoples also likes to use the time to work with students on valuable skills. Towards the end of a recent session students learned how to dress appropriately for an interview and how to properly tie a four-in-hand knot tie.
