1820 Quinine from tree bark is used as a treatment for malaria.
1880 A French physician named Charles Louis Alphonse Laveran discovered the malarial parasite.
1897 A British physician named Sir Ronald Ross came up with the complete life cycle of the malarial parasite. He wins a Nobel Prize for his work in 1902.
1934 A German scientist named Hans Andersag discovers the drug Chloroquine, which is later used as a anti-malarial drug first in the late 1940s.
1939 A Swiss scientist named Paul Herman Muller discovers a insecticide called DDT which is used to control the vector of malaria and yellow fever. He wins a Nobel Prize for his work in 1948.
1952 The malaria disease is eradicated in the United States.
1955 The Global Malaria Eradication Campaign is launched by the World Health Organization.
1957 The anti-malarial drug Chloroquine sees its first case of resistance
1989 The anti-malarial drug Mefloquine hydrochloride is approved by the Food and Drug Administration.
1992 The malarial vaccine candidate Mosquirix enters clinical trials.
1996 A study across various African nations effected by malaria shows that bed nets treated with insecticides lower the child mortality rate by 20%.
1998 The World Health Organization launches a program where local community volunteers administer anti-malarial drugs in remote African communities.
2001 The World Health Organization qualifies the drug Artemisinin as a first-line malaria treatment.
2005 A UCSF study shows that combination malaria therapy is an effective treatment on African children.
2008 The United Nations declares April 25 to be World Malaria Day.
2015 The anti-malaria drug Mosquirix is approved as a safe vaccine for malaria treatment.
