Dear Parents & Friends of SFCS,

While many of our students are excited with all the celebrations and activities with Halloween coming it is important to not forget about the important celebrations that are coming up in our Liturgical Year. Along with our Halloween Parade and Trunk and Treat on Thursday the school community will be going to mass at 10:00am on Friday, November 1st, All Saints Day, a Holy Day of Obligation. The 2nd grade students will be performing their annual All Saints Presentation after mass.

Please note that we will be going to mass on Wednesday and Friday. Children need to be dressed in his or her mass uniform for both days.

The Halloween Parade and the FSA Trunk and Treat will begin at 1:30pm on Thursday. In the October 13th edition of the Howl I described the costume guidelines for students. In keeping with our safe environment guidelines it is important for the students in our classes to stay together during the parade. Parents are welcome to walk with the class but cannot separate their child(ren) from the class. We have many participants with the Trunk and Treat this year so if you are handing out candy it is important to keep the classes moving. So please do not stop or stall individual or groups of students. There will be many opportunities for pictures at the beginning or end of the parade. Students will need to stay with their class and return to their classroom after the parade. If you are taking your child home before the regular dismissal procedure then please let your child's teacher know. We will need all trunk or treat participants that are located in areas of the regular dismissal traffic to have their area cleaned up and car moved by 2:45pm. Thank you to everyone who signed up to participate!!!

This week your student may have come home with a Box of Joy. We will be trying to donate all of our 250 boxes this year for this very worthy program. Last year we packed 180 boxes so let's try to get all our boxes packed.

Please note that report cards and fall MAP results will be coming home in an envelope with your child on Tuesday. Also on Tuesday Ms. McGlynn will send an email about Parent - Teacher Conferences that will occur on Wednesday, November 6th - Friday, November 8th. It is important that our students be active participants in their learning and progress. We ask that children in grades 3 and above be present for their conference.

I am amazed with the amount of bottle caps for the Palmetto Ocean Conservancy Bottle Cap Mural Project that have been collected! We are doing an awesome job SFCS!!! Remember that the first month of collection ends on Thursday and the class that has collected the most this month will have either a pizza party or ice party of their choosing. Happy counting!!!

Have a great remainder to your weekend!!!

Sincerely in Christ,

Brian Pope

Pre - Kindergarten

The PreK students had fun completing their lanterns, building a pumpkin patch and much more this week. Check all that is happening in PreK with Mrs. Burke's newsletter below.

The Kindergarten students were learning the parts of plants in science. They constructed their own plants in learning about roots, stems, leaves and flowers and what each part does to help the plant live.

4th Grade

The 4th Grade were busy counting their bottle caps this week and applying it to their estimation learning objectives. Four students were about 80 caps off in their estimation of over 4 thousand caps!!! Way to go!!!

5th Grade

The fifth graders created keynote presentations on different types of animals. They recently shared their keynote presentations with their classmates.

Discovery Lab - 2nd Grade

The 2nd Grade Discovery Lab continued their study of levers by experimenting with the variables that would make their catapults work most effectively. Their only materials were Popsicle sticks, rubber bands and a plastic spoon. They were able to adjust the angle between the base and the lever and found that a larger angle made the candy pumpkins fly much farther than a small angle. They also tested the effects of the mass of the objects launched to see if small or large masses flew further. Pompoms, candy corn and candy pumpkins were their experimental projectiles. The most massive, the pumpkins, flew the farthest followed by candy corn and finally, the pompoms.

Art - 7th Grade

The 7th grade students have been working with water colors in Art Class. The theme for their project was Fall. The 7th Grade and Mrs. Sweeney decided to make a art contest to see which project best represented the theme. Make sure to check all the awesome work in the main school hallway and place your vote.

Music - 5th Grade

The 5th grade students are busy preparing for their musical. They sound great! Mark your calendars for Monday, November 28th were they will be performing at 1pm, 2pm and 5:30pm.

Art - 8th Grade

Pretzels in Art? The 8th grade was concluding a lesson in making beads and Mrs. Sweeney recognized how the method was similar to baking pretzels. So to celebrate the end of the lesson the 8th grade prepared, baked and ate pretzels on Friday afternoon.

Pizza with the Principal

Mr. Pope and the Pizza with the Principal for October had a great lunch! Mr. Pope enjoyed getting to know the students better and talked about what they liked most about SFCS and of course what the students will be for Halloween!!! Thank you to the Women of St. Francis for sponsoring this program!!!

Box of Joy

Your child might have come home this week with a Box of Joy. Beta Club students from 8th grade went to your child's classroom to talk about this service project they do every year. We partner with Cross Catholic Outreach for it, and it's simple but meaningful for our students.

Each student will have the opportunity to pack a box the size of a shoe box with toys, school supplies, clothing, and other age-appropriate items. The boxes will be collected by Cross Catholic Outreach and shipped to priests and nuns who work in developing countries. They give the boxes as Christmas gifts to the children with whom they minister.

Our students love sharing these gifts with children in need, and it's a great, tangible way for us to share the love of Jesus with poor children.

More information will accompany the box your child receives, and you can also find out more at the Cross Catholic Outreach website below.
