Spring ISD Closes Schools and Offices through April 10
Spring ISD, in support of city and county measures to combat the spread of COVID-19, will close schools and offices through Friday, April 10. This closure announcement supports what health experts say is the most important strategy for containing COVID-19 — the practice of social distancing. With this extended school closure in place, the district is actively working on plans to serve students and families remotely. For more information, go to www.springisd.org.
Free Meals Available to Spring ISD Students During School Closure
Spring ISD families will be able to pick up free breakfast and lunch for their children who are 18 years old and under from 8 to 11 a.m. during the school closure at the following school sites:
Anderson Elementary, 6218 Lyngate, Spring
Bammel Elementary, 17309 Red Oak Dr., Houston
Booker Elementary, 22352 Imperial Valley Dr., Houston
Clark Primary, 12625 River Laurel Dr., Houston
Claughton Middle, 3000 Spears Rd., Houston
Hoyland Elementary, 2200 Wittershaw Dr, Houston
McNabb Elementary, 743 East Cypresswood Dr., Spring
Meyer Elementary, 16330 Forest Way Dr., Houston
Ponderosa Elementary, 17202 Butte Creek Rd., Houston
Reynolds Elementary, 3975 Gladeridge Dr., Houston
Smith Elementary, 26000 Cypresswood Dr., Spring
Families arriving during the scheduled time will receive both breakfast and lunch for their children, who must be present with their parents. Look for a drive-through area at the front of the school where the grab-and-go lunches will be handed out.
Some Resources for Parents During COVID-19 Closures
How to talk to children about COVID-19
There are a growing number of helpful resources on the internet. In particular, Spring ISD counselors have recommended resources from the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) and PBS, including Talking to Children About COVID-19 (Coronavirus): A Parent Resource and How to Talk to Your Kids About Coronavirus, which also contains additional links to online programs and other resources to share with your family.
KEY TIPS FOR PARENTS TO KEEP IN MIND
- Be as calm as you can. Children and teens are great at reading how their parents feel. The calmer you are, the calmer your child will be.
- Answer their questions, even if the answer is “I don’t know.” Right now, some people are sick. Most, however, are not.
- Tell them adults are working hard to keep them safe and healthy. Teach them what they can do to stay healthy, such as washing their hands and covering their cough with their elbow or a tissue instead of their hand.
- Turn off the technology. Seeing too much news coverage, too many social media posts and too many web pages about COVID-19 can make both parents and their children anxious.
- Make a routine, and do your best to stick to it. If possible, try waking up and going to bed at the same time each day. Eat meals at the same time. Have everyone bathe and dress as if going to school or work.

How to Opt Back In to Receive District Phone Calls and Text/SMS
Spring ISD has an automated messaging system that allows the district to communicate with parents and staff quickly and efficiently via phone call, text/sms message and email. The system is only effective, however, if the district has accurate contact information for those groups.
“Now more than ever, parents and staff need to stay connected and be well-informed about decisions that are being made and resources that are available to our families while schools are closed,” said Chief Communications Officer Tiffany Dunne-Oldfield.
Sometimes people choose or accidentally opt out of receiving the callouts and text messages and change their mind later. Spring ISD parents and staff who would like to opt back in to receive phone and text/sms messages, may do so by following the instructions below:
- Phone calls: Call the Blackboard Phone Hotline at "855-502-STOP (855-502-7867)" from the phone line that has been opted out.
- Text (SMS) messages: Reply START to "60680" from the phone line that has been opted out for non-emergency messages. Reply START to "54968" for emergency messages
