The Wise Wing
May 16, 2022
Greetings, Amazing Families,
This week our school will serve as a polling site for county/state elections on Tuesday, May 16, 2022. In year's past this almost ALWAYS guarantees an impact to carpool. We start carpool a bit earlier on Tuesday to account for these adjustments and changes. Please be patient and aware as your navigate additional cars and walkers due to voting.
As always, the news has a lot of headlines that may be stressful, confusing, or unclear to children and teens. Please be mindful of what your child consumes online. You are their first teacher. While our world is full of so many different things, remember your home, your words, and your presence can be a safe space for your child. I know we live in a world full of social media, but technology will never replace the power of human connection. 💜
This Wise Wing has important information in it! Please review it fully!! I hope you find some pockets of peace in your week.
Notes & Reminders
🚗On Tuesday, May 17, 2022, Hilburn will be used as a polling site for Primary Voting. This means that we will need to ensure half the carpool loop is available for voters with mobility challenges. We will begin our dismissal a few minutes before the bell in order to support organized efforts. This also ensures that we keep our students safe as voters access the gym/multipurpose room area. Thank you for your support with this!
🚍WCPSS Transportation and Special Transportation remains short on drivers and safety assistants. If you need to make an appointment, practice, or event, please consider alternative transportation plans for that day. Yellow buses remain about 20 minutes behind routine times in the afternoon as bus drivers run multiple routes for both Hilburn and other schools. We are so thankful for the bus drivers that we have!
Please note the following.
-If you child is absent we will as for a note and ask for a negative Covid test (at-home, rapid, or PCR) when a child is out due to a Covid symptom (vomiting, fever, severe abnormal headache, upset stomach, severe coughing/wheezing, chills, severe stuffy nose).
**If your child has routine allergies, your doctor can write a note as an alternative.
**We understand that some of our female students experience some of these symptoms with their monthly cycles, if this relates to your child's symptoms or concern, please just let Mrs. Walker know!
Let's have a great week together in our nest!
Sincerely,
Mariah Walker
Congratulations Mrs. Johnson!

PRINCIPAL INPUT SESSION!
Dear Hawk Family,
As some of you may already know, last week, the School Board appointed me as principal at Wake Young Women’s Leadership Academy beginning in July. While this is a new opportunity, it does not make it any easier to think about missing you and your amazing children.
Family is not born, it is created. In every call, wave, hug, challenge, and interaction you’ve become family to me. Your children and your family have a special place in my heart. You’ve allowed me to be a part of your lives and the story you are writing for your family. Through your stories and experiences, I’ve grown as a principal, teacher, and mother. As I think about how much we’ve been through together, there are not enough words to effectively summarize how much our school means to me.
We’ve been through so much together. I’ve been with you as you cried leaving your kindergartner and I’ve been with you as you cried leaving celebrating your 8th grader. Through the exceptional challenges of Covid-19, we’ve also found comfort in one another. I’ve been so proud of our community and how we’ve supported each other in challenges.
I am already thinking about how much I will miss you and our sweet nest. I love our students deeply and I love how much we love and care about each other.
Thank you for extending your support, kindness, and love to me over these last years. The horizon is still young, we still have time to be together and bask in the joy of our Hilburn family. I hope we can enjoy the moments in front of us richly, while cherishing the moments behind us, deeply.
With love and eternal gratitude,
Hilburn Hawks,
It has been an absolute JOY to serve our nest. I have been blessed to call our school home over these last few years. It is very important to me that our next leader knows just how special this family is. Please join us to offer feedback, wisdom, and insight as our Area Superintendent begins the search for our next leading Hawk! Details to participate are below. I hope to see you there!
With Love,
Mariah

Virtual Students in Grades 3-8 report to school to test on the SAME days as In-Person Students!
EOGs & State Tests
Students in grades 3-8 participate in state tests, commonly called EOGs or EOCs. Review the details below to see the dates for your child's assessments.
This year, students who do not score at benchmark on their EOG will have the option to take the test a second time. You can read more about this option in the letter below. Help us plan for retesting by sharing whether or not you will have your child participate in this option!
