Superintendent of the Day
Kayla visited with North Cascades National Park Acting Deputy Secretary Denise Shultz. The park is a great partner to the district and is looking to further expand opportunities for local students.
After a quick visit to a transportation department that was like a ghost town due to 20 field trips, she went to the district office and toured the business, human resources, curriculum and communications departments. She learned about the various roles in each department and then sat in the actual superintendent's chair.
Next, she went to the high school where she met Assistant Principals Chris Spencer and Sarah Dahl. And she was fortunate to meet the one and only Rhonda Morgan, sports mom to all. As a hopeful three-sport athlete (volleyball, basketball and track), Kayla now knows where to go for support in the athletic department at SWHS.
Kayla was nominated to be superintendent of the day by the leadership team at CMS. She is a great student and we're excited that this amazing Kodiak will be a Cub next year!
2022-2023 Retirements
Congratulations 2022-2023 retirees
Losing their years of expertise will leave a gap in our district, but they are very deserving of some extra time with their friends and families. They have spent many years serving our students, our schools and our community. We all owe them a debt of gratitude for leaving our hallways a better place.
Stephen Collins
Stephen Collins is a first grade teacher at Big Lake Elementary School. He is retiring this year after an undisclosed number of years in the profession.
He said he is most proud of being able to make kids believe that they can.
Stephen said the most rewarding aspect of his position was seeing 6 and 7 year olds reading in Japanese.
Now that heβs retiring, Stephen plans to continue to work in his woodshop making stuff, conquer Galbraith, sell his wife's art, go river rafting and do other boating, sing in the choir, hang out, and read!
Lisa Schiefelbein
Lisa Schiefelbein has worked in the district for 31 years. She is retiring from Sedro-Woolley High School where she most recently served as head cook.
Lisa loved working with the other gals in the kitchen. She said the group is very flexible and gets the job done no matter what happens!
The most rewarding part of her job was simple: just getting it done.
Now that sheβs retiring, Lisa is hoping to travel more and she is really happy about not having to set her alarm for 3:45 in the morning.
Peg Neva
Peg Neva is retiring from Evergreen Elementary School after 29 years in Sedro-Woolley with a couple of years thrown in in the Highline School District for fun. She has most recently served as a third grade teacher.
She is most proud of Evergreenβs STEM vision. She is incredibly thankful she was able to play a big part in bringing the Salmon in Schools project to the schoolβs third grade.
Pegβs favorite quote that summarizes her educational philosophy or experiences in the educational setting is "I love a good challenge.β
Peg said the most rewarding aspect of her position was the wonderful, surprised look on a student's face when they pushed themselves through something challenging, and realized it was because of their persistence.
Peg is moving to Hawaii to live near her daughter after graduation!
Becky Goodell
Becky Goodell worked 29 years in Special Programs for the district. She said she is most proud of the therapeutic bike riding program she established and that she is leaving an awesome team in place to carry on her work.
Beckyβs favorite educational quote is βPraise must be specific, provide clear goals and honest knowledge of results.β
She said the most rewarding portion of her career was helping kids gain skills they and their families were initially afraid to believe for.
Becky said retirement will become real with Fall backpacking and midweek skiing trips. She plans on doing lots of flying and learning how to do Cub maintenance (she is a pilot). She also plans on traveling to and with her kids and grandkids. She plans on staying active in physical therapy on medical mission trips, and if she really gets serious, putting together a therapeutic bike riding instructors course.
Jamie Harr
Before Jamie Harr (special ed/LAP teacher at Big Lake) started teaching, she was a para in the Skagit Discovery Program starting in 1989, before going to CMS as a para. She began teaching at Skagit Discovery in 2005 and for the district in 2014.
She is most proud about ββadvocating for her special education students and teaching them academics as well as social skills.
Her favorite quote is, βBe yourself; everyone else is already taken.β
The most rewarding part of her career has been watching students learn to read and understand what they read. She has also enjoyed working with parents along with her students.
After retirement, Jamie plans on living the dream of sleeping in and traveling!
Jeri Hubbard
Jeri Hubbard is retiring after five years working at State Street High School.
She loved the students at State Street, and making sure they all had a meal to eat made her feel good. She said it made her feel great to know she was responsible for providing a special hot meal five days a week.
Jeriβs favorite quote that summarized her experiences in the educational setting: βNot all kids fit in the same boxes.β
The most rewarding aspect has been loving all the students exactly as they are. Jeri said the State Street students were some of the most loving kids sheβs known and that they are the most awesome bunch.
She will be wintering in Arizona. Riding her motorcycle in the land of sunshine.
State representatives visit SWHS
Washington State Representative Sam Low, R-Lake Stevens, and Representative Carolyn Eslick, R-Sultan, visited Sedro-Woolley High School earlier this week where they had a roundtable discussion with teachers, counselors, two school board members and administrators about the students' High School and Beyond Plans. As part of their visit, they also visited an advisory class and talked with students about their plans and how they shift from the time they start them in middle school to later in high school (several of the sophomore students had solid plans for their future!).
The High School and Beyond Plan is a graduation requirement for every student. It's a process for students, parents, and teachers to guide students through high school and think about their future. Plans are personalized and designed to help students set, visualize, and work to achieve goals. A High School and Beyond Plan is one of the three components, along with Credit and Subject Area Requirements, and Graduation Pathway Options, that Washington students must complete to achieve a high school diploma.

Carrie Newby: Central Elementary School
Carrie Newby has been named the 2022-2023 Employee of the Year for Central Elementary School.
Carrie is an amazing educator. She truly loves and cares about her students. Carrie builds a classroom culture that acts as a family. She is an integral part of the school's Ci3T Team, she keeps everyone focused and on task. She is willing to present information and new learning during staff trainings. She isn't afraid to remind the group about the norms they have agreed upon and to make sure that students are always at the heart of the decisions made by staff.
Carrie brings a positive morale to the Central team. She sends uplifting emails and surprised staff last year by bringing in goodies to their data meetings.
Carrie has excellent attendance. She is rarey gone and when she needs to be out, she works with her team to make sure her students are prepared for the day. Carrie organized an evening before Valentine's day for families to come decorate the desks of their 6th grade students. She decorated the desk of every student who didn't have one decorated by family members. Carrie also stays late to work with students who need extra support on her own time.
Carrie has excellent relationships with the families of her students. She is a positive role model and speaks highly of Central's staff, district, and students. Carrie also supports former students by attending their extracurricular events at Cascade. She also goes to Cascade on the first day of school to be a friendly face for former Central students who may be nervous on their first day of middle school.
Jennifer Swenson: Mary Purcell Elementary School
Jennifer Swenson has been named the 2022-2023 Employee of the Year for Mary Purcell Elementary School.
Jennifer demonstrates outstanding leadership qualities in a variety of ways through participation in building leadership and supporting extra-curricular activities for both students and staff. She approaches her position with a lot of energy and passion for creating a fun and exciting learning environment for both students and her teaching partners. She looks at her position as not just a job, but a career, and demonstrates her dedication for our school through her support of others and her leadership.

Celeste Peralta: District Office
Celeste Peralta has been named the 2022-2023 Employee of the Year for the District Office.
Not only does Celeste help out her co-workers, but she sets aside time to create opportunities to invite employees to come in for one-on-one help. She fills in at the front desk every day. She fills in as the Sub Coordinator as needed and flexes her normal schedule to accommodate. Celeste is also bilingual and helps translate for the district and our Spanish population of employees/staff and students. Celeste wears many hats and is always ready to step up and help keep Sedro-Woolley School District running smooth.
Celeste coordinates and keeps our paraprofessionals on track to receive their Para Certification. This is a huge task and not all of the individuals she is trying to help are computer proficient. In fall of 2022 Celeste implemented two seperate days of opportunity to invite any paras who wanted one-on-one help applying for their certification to come in and she sat with them and helped them. She plans to do this again in the spring. She had to become an "Instructor" in HRM+ in order to offer and keep the Para trainings moving along smoothly. This is just one example of her consistent reliability showing responsibility in her job performance... Celeste is a ROCKSTAR!
Kimberly Lukehart: Special Programs Department
Kimberly Lukehart has been named the 2022-2023 Employee of the Year for the district's Special Programs Department.
Kim carries a huge caseload with excellence. She goes through screenings with teachers or therapists when concerns are expressed regarding potential vision challenges. She provides staff with a clear explanation of vision reports and consistently provides information on how this could impact the child's school performance. Her work with students and their families is consistently excellent. She proactively obtains amazing resources for blind students at no cost to the district.
She supports extracurricular activities such as robotics classes for visually impaired students on her own time. She actively recruits and supports these students' participation and connects students and their families obtain technology resources for home and school. Working with the birth-to-2 population, Kim is an early advocate connecting parents to the school system such that by the time they get to preschool and elementary school these parents are truly education partners with the district.
Alexsis Nelson: Samish Elementary School
Alexsis Nelson has been named the 2022-2023 Employee of the Year for Samish Elementary School.
Alexsis goes above and beyond by helping everyone on campus whenever there is a need. She genuinely cares about each and every student and their academic, behavior, and social-emotional well-being and success.
She may be a SPED/LAP teacher, but all of our students know sheβs here for every one of them. Alexsis goes out of her way to make all of her students feel welcomed and important in a way that is uniquely theirs. Her teaching always invites an environment that cultivates and nurtures learning. It invites students to question and learn skills to problem solve and love the process of learning.
Growing up her whole life in Skagit County, Alexsis is a part of this community which gives her a unique perspective for what our community strives for and needs from our teachers. Alexsisβ close family members currently live and attend our district schools. This perspective encourages her joy of teaching our community's youth, knowing how important education is.
She has attended all after-school events that were hosted by Samish and welcome to the community. We had a Harvest party in Fall that she happily came to and joined in on the fun. Also recently we had a vendor fair for a weekend at Samish. Alexsis was very helpful in any way that she could for both days. Any chance she got to talk with Parents or students that came to her, she was right there. These are just a couple examples but as you can see, she will take any opportunity to lend a hand and be helpful to our community. All of these opportunities she took she did with a happy heart and a smile on her face. This shows how much she cares for people, wants the best for everyone and how she appreciates what Sedro-Woolley has to offer to our students.
Lisa Schiefelbein: Food Service Department
Lisa Schiefelbein has been named the 2022-2023 Employee of the Year for the Food Service Department.
Lisa is new to the Head Cook position at Sedro-Woolley High School this year, although she has worked in the Food Service Department for the last 30 years. Lisa goes above and beyond her normal job duties every day to ensure high quality meals are available to students. This year has been challenging to procure many products due to supply chain challenges, and Lisa consistently adapts to the ongoing shortages and develops solutions with a positive attitude.
Earlier this year, Lisa stopped by the kitchen on the weekend to thaw food for Monday and discovered the walk-in cooler had stopped working. Lisa spent her own time taking inventory, discarding spoiled product and moving items that were salvageable to ensure the program was ready for operation on Monday.
Lisa has not missed a day of work this year. When the Head Cook position was posted last spring, she was initially hesitant about assuming the Head Cook role, but has been able to effectively and efficiently manage the kitchen through a transition in leadership. She is confident in making daily decisions and managing the workload to ensure all students are fed.
She will be dearly missed by her coworkers as she heads into retirement at the end of this school year.
Amanda Hall: Good Beginnings Preschool
Amanda Hall has been named the 2022-2023 Employee of the Year for Good Beginnings Preschool.
Amanda is always there for the children, families and staff. She manages a huge volume of tasks and consistently supports others proactively. She goes above and beyond by staying for family nights, organizing morale building socials, and solving problems for the preschool, including coordinating coverage when there are no subs. In addition to the preschool, she supports programs across the district, including 504, Home Hospital, Medicaid Billing and Discipline Tracking. She keeps everyone on track and the preschool would not be able to serve kids the same without her hard work year after year.
She is always one step ahead so that everyone can do their jobs for kids. For example, she puts together class lists if she knows that the district is going to be talking about roll-up and transitions. She contacts transportation or facilities if there is an issue before anyone tells her to do so. She schedules evaluations, meetings, coverage for classrooms, and reminders for the district programs of 504, Home Hospital and Medicaid. She stays on top of issues and provides training and support to new staff. She really goes beyond every day.
Stephen Daley: Facilities Department
Stephen Daley has been named 2022-2023 Employee of the Year for the Facilities Department.
He earned this award due to his "whatever it takes to get it done" attitude. Stephen is truly one of those remarkable individuals who cares about Evergreen students and staff as well as the district. He exhibits this every day by going out of his way to make sure issues are not only taken care of, but done completely and well. Stephen has a great sense of humor and exhibits it, even when the work or the situation can be tough. He is relentless when it comes to ensuring his building is maintained and willing to assist with anything that is asked of him.
Stephen takes care of any issues that arise and does a great job of anticipating issues and taking care of them before they are a problem. Additionally, he is often used to train other custodians because of his thoroughness and patience.
Bette Jenkins: Sedro-Woolley High School
Bette Jenkins has been named the 2022-2023 Employee of the Year for Sedro-Woolley High School.
Bette is simply amazing! Always willing to help out in any of the CTE courses before, during and after school hours! Bette not only is a real asset to all the teachers, she is wonderful with ALL the students in our classes! She has a natural gift of being able to deal with even the most challenging students in a positive way. She knows all our programs, offers support in ways she isnβt required to. If one of us is out, she juggles her duties and steps up to support our students in amazing ways. She builds relationships like no one I have ever worked with before.
She works with our students moving seamlessly between all CTE departments serving classes with the highest number of students with IEPs. She is knowledgeable of our subjects, our safety protocols, our routines. I have no idea how she does it. She even steps up and substitute teaches when she needs to.
Bette is retiring this year after many years of service to kids. She is amazing and handles everything with respect and grace. Bette is a team player. She is dependable, a hard worker, goes above and beyond, confident, calm and reassuring. Bette is fun to be around. Everyone wants Bette in their class because she is a such a great support to kids in the classroom. As well Bette recognizes when staff need help and offers her assistance. She helps take care of business! When Bette is gone we will feel the loss. It just won't be the same without her.
Sarah Dahl: Foundations K
Sarah helps run the Sedro-Woolley Early Learning League. She presented at a national conference this past year about community partnerships and early learning. She is versatile with her leadership and has gone wherever she is needed with great positivity. She makes an impact on every team she works with and inspires others. Kids and staff love her.
Congratulations!
"Roadeo" participants
A big shout out to Sedro-Woolley drivers Autumn Pawlowicz and Marlise Dorsey for participating in our ESD 189 Regional School Bus "Roadeo" that was held at Mariner High School on May 6.
The competition starts with a written test, a pre-trip bus inspection and then driving the bus through an obstacle course.
The obstacle course consists of parallel parking, curb line, right hand turn, straight line, offset alley, student loading and unloading and railroad crossing, just to name a few. This enhances their knowledge as well as their driving skills.
Autumn took 5th place and Marlise took 18th place. Tracy Gugel, Chad Wesson and Chrissy Dills attended the event to support the drivers. The group had a great time and plan on getting more drivers involved next year.
