Welcome Back

The School Counseling Department hopes that everyone had a restful summer. We are excited to start the 2016-2017 school year. This year the School Counseling Department will be sending out our own monthly newsletter entitled Dream Team Chronicles. We are hoping to keep everyone well informed of all the great happenings occurring in our department, school and community!

The class of 2020 seems to be acclimating well to the high school. The counselors have begun individual meet and greet sessions with their freshman and are enjoying getting to know them.

Our amazing seniors have begun their Common Application process with the School Counseling Department. Ongoing assistance will be provided to all seniors through the Common Application workshops. Workshops will be held every Wednesday and Thursday from 2pm-3pm in the Resource Center. The counselors will be on hand to assist students with all aspects of the Common Application. Students are highly encouraged to utilize this service.

This year's PSAT will occur on Wednesday October 19th. All freshman, sophomore, and junior students will take some form of the PSAT.

Our freshman students will take the PSAT 8/9. This test establishes a baseline measurement of a student’s college and career readiness as they enter high school. Our Sophomores and Juniors take the PSAT’s as a practice for the actual SAT’s. They are a shortened version of the SAT’s. Students can prepare for the test by visiting ww.collegeboard.org.

Students here in Wolcott are at an advantage because we give the PSAT’s for all 9th, 10th & 11th grade students free of charge during the school day. If you have any questions regarding this testing please call the School Counseling Department. Just like any other testing, we encourage students to take this test seriously since it will give them an indication of how well they will do on the SAT’s. We encourage students to get a good night’s rest the night before and to eat breakfast that morning. The testing time should be around three hours.

The PSAT/NMSQT lets students:

  • Get ready for the SAT
  • Enter National Merit Scholarship Corporation competitions for recognition and scholarships
  • Access personalized college and career planning resources in My College QuickStart
  • Request information from colleges and universities
  • Assess critical reading, mathematical reasoning and writing skills
  • Get specific suggestions on how to improve academic skills

Senior College Visit Day

Wednesday, Oct. 19th, 7:30am

Anywhere, USA

Seniors will have the opportunity on October 19th to miss school to take a college tour/visit or visit a program of your choice. In order to get this time off excused, you will need to show the school proof of your attendance. When you return to school the next day, you will need to provide the attendance office with a note from the college/program that proves that you were visiting a program on that specific date and someone from that program will need to sign off. It should also include the school’s seal or letterhead. If you have any questions and/or concerns about this, please contact the School Counseling Department at 203-879-8157 or see your counselor.

We hope that students will take advantage of this opportunity.
