Notes from Mrs. Mankin
Dear Bulldog Families,
Our third and fourth grade students are about halfway through our ILEARN state assessment. This assessment is replacing our previous ISTEP+ assessment and is given to all students in grades 3-8. The purpose of this online test is to measure your child’s proficiency regarding the Indiana Academic Standards. Our 3rd and 4th grade students are being assessed in English/language arts and math; 4th grade also takes a science portion within the ILEARN assessment. This test is computer-adaptive which means that the questions adapt to each student’s mastery of the content throughout the assessment. The format is similar to that of our NWEA assessment, however, the content stays within the grade-level standards. The questions also address a deeper level of thinking than our previous ISTEP+ test. If you would like more information regarding this new assessment, please visit the Department of Education website at https://www.doe.in.gov/assessment/ilearn-families . We are very proud of the effort that our students put forth in taking this new assessment!
We would like to thank our PTO, teachers, staff, and families for a wonderful inaugural Color Blast. We ended up having decent weather and a night filled with walking, music, games, fun, friends, and family. The money raised by this and other PTO events goes directly back to your students in a variety of formats: field trip transportation (1 trip per grade-level), recess equipment, classroom and/or grade-level grants, books, family night supplies, and numerous other ways. During this event, you may have donated items or money for our Humane Society inquiry project spearheaded by a third and kindergarten classroom. They also organized and held a lemonade sale during lunch one day to raise money for needed items. The combined total they raised to help the Hamilton County Humane Society was over $400. They will be taking a study trip on Monday to tour the facility and present our donation. Thank you for supporting passion projects led by our students! We would also like to thank our parent volunteers who assisted us with the lemonade sale.
Our student-led recycling initiative also seems to be going well. A HUGE thank you to our parent volunteers for continuing to support this work! These projects are just two examples of student-led inquiry. To see even more examples of this type of work at New Britton and in other HSE schools, be sure to attend this week’s HSEvening of Innovation on Wednesday, May 1st. Bulldog teachers and students will be showcasing kindergarten exploration, service learning, recycling cross-grade level inquiry work, and Track-to-Trail student input/learning. We will also show how we are supporting our social-emotional learning in the classroom. We are so excited to have teachers and students involved in this community event. This district-wide celebration of innovation in education will take place at Fishers High School from 6-8 p.m. Come take part in future-ready learning experiences at nearly 100 innovation booths and playgrounds representing all HSE Schools buildings and grade levels. Don't miss this family-friendly event. As always, thank you for partnering with us in education. Have a great weekend!
