Weekly WOW - January 12, 2019

East Vincent Elementary School

We had a busy week of fun and learning at EV!

Besides our Weekly WOW, remember to stay updated about grade-specific and special area happenings by visiting our weekly newsletters section: https://www.ojrsd.com/domain/1452. Our reading and math specialists also keep updated information via their Weebly page at https://evreadingandmathcorner.weebly.com/newsletters.html.

If you have a question or suggestion about communication from a teacher or from EV, feel free to let us know. We appreciate your feedback and partnership.

The school-wide positive behavior systems (Go CATS) and the Responsive Classroom approach will soon be joined by a roll-out of the research-based OLWEUS Bullying Prevention Program. The program, while not new to OJRSD or EV, needed a refresh and a revisit. With new staff and families over the past few years, it is worth a complete roll-out of the program so we understand bullying, the goals of the OLWEUS program, and the approach we take to bullying incidents at EV. Stay tuned for more information from our OLWEUS Bullying Prevention Program committee.

EV has a very talented news team comprised of 6th grade students who participate in an independent study. Under the direction of Mrs. Sarkar and with assistance from Miss Mitton, students produce a weekly news broadcast, which started in November. EV News reports school-related news, jokes, the weekly challenge, special features, and even bloopers! We plan to start sharing our EV News with our families each week. Enjoy!

On Wednesday, January 9, EV recognized members of East Vincent Police Department and staff from the OJRSD Safety and Security Department for National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day.

The student and staff spotlights written by our Grade 6 CATS Ambassadors will return next week.

As always, we keep our webpage calendar updated with school happenings such as assemblies, PTA meetings and events, and after-school activities. Please continue to visit our webpage calendar.

Coming soon... Clubs for students in grades K-2!

Based on parent surveys, we plan to pilot two new club offerings, Bricks4Kids and Science Explorers. Originally meant for students in grades K-1 only, we will offer the club opportunities to students in grade 2, too. Keep an eye on our Weekly WOW and your child's backpack for club information.

Overall details: We hope to start a pilot for K-2 after-school opportunities in early 2019. We imagine the opportunities would take place from 3:15-4:15 at EV, and students who attend kindergarten and first, second grades at EV would be eligible to attend. Families would provide transportation. There are out-of-pocket costs associated with the programs.
*Students who attend AM kindergarten would need transportation to/from the program.
**Students who attend ACP after school may attend and return to ACP after the program.
