Message from Mr. Agius
Harlan Families,
It was nice to be back with the kids this week. I loved being able to chat with many of them about the fun events that took place over Spring Break. From vacations to staycations and birthday parties to family movie nights, I enjoy hearing the kids talk about it with so much excitement.
Speaking of Spring, it is that time of the year when the temperature is up and down and that means that the coats come off and on while the kids are at recess. Please take a moment to write your child’s name on their jackets as they are often times left outside once they are taken off. I hate to see our lost and found fill up so quickly. If their names are on their jacket, the jacket can be returned and is often done so that same day it is found.
Finally, we ended our week with a multi-school Zoom session with author Dennis Mathew who is also a skilled singer-songwriter and Elementary School Speech Pathologist. We were captivated by is guitar playing, singing and the reading of his personal books.
Good Luck to all of our 4th and 5th Grade Science Olympians as well as our 2nd and 3rd grade Math Pentathletes as they compete this Saturday. Go get ‘em Huskies!
Enjoy the weekend!
Sincerely,
Alex

April is Autism Acceptance Month
April is Autism Acceptance Month where we’re celebrating Autistic voices! Throughout the month of April and beyond, we will be sharing a variety of educational resources and information from and about the Autistic community. When you walk around Harlan, you will see story walks about Autism and inclusion. As we work together to learn more, we want to move beyond awareness for the month of April to acceptance and inclusion all year round! Below are links of resources and videos to learn more about the Autisitc community. There is also a link to an Autism Acceptance Bitmoji Classroom that has a wealth of resources, information, and read alouds! Please take a few moments to share these resources with your family and celebrate Autistic voices!
This school year Harlan became a Unified Champion School through the Special Olympics. Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools is a program for schools Pre-K through university that intentionally promotes meaningful social inclusion by bringing together students with and without disabilities to create accepting school environments, utilizing three interconnected components: Special Olympics Unified Sports, inclusive youth leadership, and whole school engagement. This month our Harlan Huskies will be taking a respect and kindness pledge. At the end of April, all students will have the opportunity to sign our Harlan Unified Champion Schools banner and take the respect and kindness pledge. April is Harlan’s kickoff to continuing to create a more inclusive and accessible community for all learners.

Gleaners Canned Food Drive
5th graders Annabel Cusmano, Taylor Simon and Hayley Sadeghi have organized a canned food drive to support Gleaners Community Food Bank. The drive will take place from April 11-29, and collection boxes will be located in the Harlan vestibule and throughout the school.
Gleaners’ greatest need right now is for non-perishable protein items such as canned tuna, canned salmon, canned chicken, and peanut butter, as these items are needed most and are most expensive for Gleaners to buy. Please consider donating one or more of these items. We are also collecting:
· Canned fruit and canned vegetables
· Canned beans
· Healthy cereal
· Oatmeal

School Lunches (repeat)
In case there is confusion on how the free lunch works this school year, here is the breakdown of what it includes and when a charge is made to a student account:
One complete lunch includes milk, entrée, and fruit/vegetable. There is no charge as long as all of those items are taken.
If a student has a second entrée, the student’s account will be charged $1.50. If a students want an individual serving of only one item, here is the breakdown of charges for it:
Milk - $0.50
Fruit - $0.50
Vegetables - $0.50
Juice - $0.50
Water - $0.50
Invoices for negative balance are sent home every Friday through the communication folder from the teacher. Charges can be viewed at all times through www.sendmoneytoschool.com and the office can be contacted if you need assistance with setting up your account.
Allergy Alert (repeat)
BPS takes all food allergies seriously, however, with the nationwide food supply chain issues it is not guaranteed that the menu items listed will be served that day. Unfortunately this means that fast changes does not allow for Chartwells to change to food items that may or may not contain allergens including peanuts and tree nuts. If you have any questions, please contact Pattie Guck at pguck@birmingham.k12.mi.us.
