Lithosphere

What is it?
The lithosphere is earths outer layer, made up of rocks in the crust and upper mantle that behave as brittle solids. The lithosphere sits on top of the asthenosphere, a layer of the mantle in which rocks are hot and like lava.
How thick is it?
40 km to 200 km, but 40 km of it is crust.

The layers include:
the skin or crust -a rock outer layer
The top of the upper mantel-cool and dense part of rock
What is it made up of?
the contents of the oceans, and the earths surface
