IB Community Projects Newsletter

MYP Year 3 - 2022

What is an IB Community Project?

Every year our MYP Year 3 students complete a project called the Community Project. This is a semester-long project where they select a need in the community and work to help make a difference in that need. Here is where YOU come in! Some of our projects have goals of collecting donations of items or money to be donated to specific causes. Please give this newsletter a good read through and see if there is anything that speaks to your heart. There is always room for you to make donations to a project that catches your eye. Be sure to click on links to get more information or find out how to make your donations.

Here is some information about this year's projects. Please be sure to read them and donate!

Tunnel to Towers Fundraiser by Anthony and Samuel

This project is gathering funds through GoFundMe for veterans. They picked this topic because, during their research, they saw all the struggles veterans go through after retirement. All donations will be donated to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. Read more information about Tunnel to Towers on the organization website: https://t2t.org/. The link below goes directly to the boys' GoFundMe page. Their overall goal is to collect $750.00. Please help any way you can.

Stop Bullying by Megan, Yosselyn and Angelina

These girls write: "We want to spread the word about bullying. We are going to make a heart-shaped poster and put it in the hallways. The poster will have sticky notes written with positive messages. We will also give a speech about bullying for elementary during their lunch. The goal of this project is to spread the word around about bullying and possibly end bullying or decrease the amount of bullies." They have shared several websites that might inspire you to tackle the problem of bullying head on:

Charms for Change by Lisa, Julia and Kayley

The girls write: "For our project, we will be making bracelets and selling them. All proceeds will go to support juvenile diabetes. We will have two styles of bracelets, and each will be $1. We will have a braided friendship bracelet and one with beads. We are selling until May 1st. We hope that we can raise $100 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. We wanted to do this so that we could contribute and make a difference by giving money to JDRF, and leave whoever donates with something tangible that we hope they will enjoy." Please see the link below for more information about the JDRF. Also, here is an email address you can contact if you are interested in buying a bracelet or making a donation to this project:

Action Against Hunger! by Javon

This project is about feeding those who can't afford a good meal. The reason for this project is because people should not have to worry about if they will eat every day. The organization selected for this project, Action Against Hunger, can help make a difference. The goal of this project is to raise $300. Please donate!

Raising Animal Awareness by Jazmine, Janaiya & Paige

The girls write: "Our project is about trying to raise awareness about animal cruelty. Any amount of money donated can go a long way and help animals in need. Our intent is to try to raise enough money to help out shelters, for example HAPPI Farm. This farm takes in unwanted pets or animals. They care for and tend to animals, as well. Donate now and you'll make a change. Our goal is to raise $500." The link to their GoFundMe page is below. Also, please see their website for more information about the project recipient.

Animals in Labs- Is it Right? by Jasmin

Jasmin says, "I'm providing a voice for animals that don't have any rights or choice in being in experiments. There are many alternatives to animal testing, and I think people should be made aware of the injustice these animals have to face every day. I want at least 20 people to know about animal rights and what they can do to put an end to animal testing. Some of these tests are not reliable. For example, aspirin is very toxic to dogs, but it does not have any life threatening affects to humans." Please see Jasmin's presentation on the issue of Animal Testing and make informed choices when you decide to purchase products.

Blessing the Homeless by Matthew and Alex

This group writes, "We are going to be feeding the homeless because we want them to have good food and for them not to die from starvation. These homeless people need food because they don't have the money to get food and without food they could die. So we are going to be feeding the homeless, showing we care for these homeless people. Our goal is to get at least 6 hours in feeding the homeless." Working in a soup kitchen is a worthy way to spend your free time. Will you consider helping the homeless, too?

Hollywood Beach Cleanup by Luke, David and Aayan

This is what the boys had to say about their project: "We are going to Hollywood Beach, and we will be collecting trash. By doing this beach cleanup, we can be saving our environment and animals' lives. We hope to inspire people to do this act so we can make our beaches cleaner than ever! Our goal is to collect 3-4 bags of trash." Read below for information about why beach cleanups are important. We have many organized beach cleanups in our area- maybe it's a good way to spend a Saturday making a difference?

Pet Power by Ashlyn and Michelle

These girls say, "We are raising awareness about a national need for stopping animal abuse and cruelty. We are doing this by selling cookies and making posters around the school to express how much this need matters. Every cookie we sell leads to another step to our goal. The organization we are donating to help with the issue is the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or ASPCA works to help rescue animals from cruelty or abuse, share resources around the globe with other shelters, and passes laws for animals. Our goal is to raise 100 dollars to donate to the ASPCA."

Raising Money for the Blind and Visually Impaired by Zailah

Zailah's project helps people with vision disabilities by raising money so that they can get the things they need. She would like to collect at least $100 to donate to the Florida Association of Agencies Serving the Blind. Their website says, "Your philanthropy also helps us find resources for under-funded local and state-level agencies serving the blind and ways to save and help them stretch tight budgets."

Donating to Help Build Playgrounds by Lucas, Marley and Kaleb

This is what the boys write: "Our project is to donate to an organization that builds playgrounds in our community. To make money to donate, we have started a GoFundMe page. To get the word out about our GoFundMe page, we will do social media campaigns. The main social media platform that we will do fundraising on is Facebook. Our goal is to raise between $100 - $350." Here is a website about the playgrounds they are working to fund: www.playmart.com

Good Karma Pet Rescue provides a great service to the community since they rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome animals. This group wants to raise awareness to get a very special dog named Paisley adopted. Paisley has been at the Adoption Center for nearly a year, and they are hoping to find her a home by raising awareness of Paisley’s story. Are you looking for companionship? Check out the Good Karma Pet Rescue website at https://www.goodkarmapetrescue.org/.

We are also requesting donations to Good Karma Pet Rescue, and our main goal is to collect $500 to spend on pet food, beds, etc.
