From the Director
Dear CDS Community,
I hope all of you had an excellent Chuseok Break!
It was wonderful to see students return on morning feeling rested and excited to continue learning alongside their teachers and peers. I'm so encouraged by the high level of engagement I"m seeing throughout the Middle School this year. As Term 1 winds down, I hope students will continue working hard, taking risks, and being kind.
One Tuesday, Fall NWEA MAP testing began. Although many students were not able to finish, I'm grateful that that they applied their very best effort. Fortunately MAP tests are not timed, and so students will be given time to finish up next week during Lab and Flex. In addition to MAP testing, students were introduced to this year's Math Competition challenge, and received information about the upcoming Science Fair. Our learners also had a lot of wrapping up Season 1 of Dalton Cup.
Coming up next week, we look forward to the Middle School Book Swap, a student council Bake Sale, and Parent Information Session on Thursday.
Have a great weekend!

Parent Information Session #1
In this session, we will discuss our rationale for the 2019-20 schedule changes. We will discuss "Flex Time" and explain how it's going so far. We will also review the changes made to the World Language progression.
This will be a good opportunity for parents to have a deeper understanding of these changes. We also hope to receive your questions, concerns, and feedback.
Please RSVP by clicking the button below, and completing the form.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the MS Office.
Thank you,
Mr. Scoville

Student Council Bake Sale
We will be having a small bake sale including drinks, frozen fruit pops, and chocolate snacks that students will like. We will be often opening bake sales through the year, and all of our money received will be used for organizing upcoming big events for our middle school. We hope that many students take a lot of interest in our bake sale!

Math Competition Introduction
The Middle School Math Department is happy to announce that the math competition for 2019-2020 has begun! Students gathered in the library on Wednesday for the introduction to this year's competition. The theme this year is to research and present a 5 to 7-minute presentation on any topic relating to math from 1900 to 1945.
They will work in teams of four with two members from 5th or 6th grade and the other two members from 7th or 8th grade. On October 16th, the teams will present their research to a panel of judges and the top four teams will receive prizes and Dalton Cup points.
We look forward to seeing their collaboration and creativity shine through during the entire competition process, especially the presentations!

Studying Chinese Zodiac in Chinese Class with Ms. Liu
Students are also working on a cultural project. They have been working hard to research the information on Chinese Zodiac, for example, the story of the Great Race, the order of Chinese Zodiac and the cultural meaning for each zodiac in Chinese culture.

Science Explorer's Club - Ethical Bug Catching
This week students in Science Explorers C.C. had a chance to sample insect life around CDS. By examining native species as the seasons change students gained insight into the ebb and flow of insect populations as they enter and exit different stages of life.
Students learned methods of insect collection that do not harm species and ensure their safe return to their habitat after examination and documentation. It was amazing to see how a simple walk through the park turned into a nature expedition guided by enthusiastic young naturalists!
