Oak Hills Newsletter

Principal's Message
Dear Oak Hills Families,
Conferences are next week. As in previous years, teachers will continue suggesting an academic and/or a behavior learning goal for your student by consulting with you. These goals will be based on the learning targets in the report card. Teachers will input the goal into the comment section of the first semester report card and update you on the progress on that goal.
Additionally, this is our second year in using the Independent Reading Level Assessment (IRLA) to understand your child’s strengths and areas of growth in reading. IRLA tells us the highest “level” of text a student can read by themselves without any support or help. Each level is connected to the Common Core State Standards, and in order to move up levels, students need to demonstrate proficiency in key standards and power goals. This is a powerful instructional tool and we are very excited to share it with you.
During the Reading workshop, students meet with their teachers frequently either one on one or in small groups to share the skills they have gained and to talk about what goals they would work on next. This is a great way for students to grow and for teachers to provide individualized reading instruction.
I look forward to seeing you during conferences and thank you for all your support with the Jog-A-Thon. Although I was unable to run with the students due to a foot injury, I had a blast cheering them on. Again, thank you for all that you do for us!!
Warm regards,
Sheila Baumgardner
Thank you to the Jogathon Committee and to all our volunteers!
Thank you to Kim Douglas and Cyndie Pelto for organizing the Jogathon this year and to Lindsey Burnham, our volunteer coordinator, for managing the new volunteer system for this event. Rita Pipes and Mandi MacAskill, thank you for making sure Pledgestar worked and that money was collected in a timely fashion. Thank you also to Kim Caldwell, Amelia Carnahan, Jen Cooper, Melica Ellerbrook, Kim Ehler, Hilary Franks, Leah Hay, Sherri Lucas, Lindsey Lyons, Michelle McGhee, Wendy Turinsky, Heather Wadia, Shari Whiteaker and all the other volunteers who came out to help today.
Emergency Going Home Plans
We are gearing up to be prepared in case we have any inclement weather this winter season. It is important for us to know how each child will get home if there is an emergency closure. As a family, please talk about what you would like your child to do in the event that school gets out early due to weather. Share your plans with your child. At conferences, teachers will verify your emergency going home plans with you to make sure we have the most up to date information. Thanks for helping us prepare for winter weather!
Attendance
Additionally, when students come to school late, they often feel embarrassed. It is hard to enter a classroom after everyone has settled in. The students who are already there cannot help but notice the movement as a late student enters and if this is your child, they might feel like everyone is watching them. Our teachers do many of their community building activities in the morning, so students who come late have less of a chance to bond with their teacher and classmates. These are just a few of the reasons why arriving on time can start your student out on the right foot every day.
At Oak Hills, we are committed to promoting on-time attendance. Please contact us if you are noticing attendance issues in your household. We can troubleshoot and help you find solutions to any attendance problem. Thanks for making this investment in your child's long-term academic success!
Learning Options Information for 2017-2018
The Beaverton School District is nationally recognized for high student achievement and innovative programs. Beaverton students in grades 6-12 have the opportunity to investigate learning options that best fit their academic needs. Students can choose their neighborhood school or one of a number of small learning options. Transportation is provided.
Applications will be available starting Monday, October 23rd, 2017. All applicants must reside within the Beaverton School District boundaries. Current Beaverton School District students will be able to apply online using their student ID, once the application portal opens. Resident students not currently attending a Beaverton school will need to complete a paper application.
WE WANT YOU!
Parents are a great asset to our school. Please help us show off the rich culture of our school community! We invite you to share a special talent with our students in a 10-15 minute showcase on Wednesday, November 29th. Do you play an instrument? Can you present a cultural dance? Do you do something dynamic for a career? Or do you have a different idea? Please share it!! You would be presenting to each grade level between 8am and 1pm. We value you as role models, and know the students would love to learn from you. All presenters will need to complete an application and background check. Please refer to https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/depts/CCI/volunteer-engage for more information.
