Mr. Calbick's April Update

Cloverdale Traditional School - Div. 14

Welcome Back!

I hope everyone enjoyed their Spring Break! I am looking forward to seeing the kids and hearing what everyone was up to. I opted to stay around town this Spring Break and spend time with family and friends. Although with our weather, it sure would have been nice to have gone somewhere warm!

April is going to be a very busy month for our class. This week we are getting back into full swing. The first unit we are going to be learning about is "All About Family." We will be talking about our families and discussing how families are made up of people who love us and that all families are different.

After our Family Unit, we will be learning about "Spring." Within this unit, we will be learning about the affects of different types of weather, and the life cycles of different plants and flowers. The students will get to plant many different seeds and record daily observations in their journals.

Our last unit in April, which is one of my favourites, is "Under the Sea." Within this unit, students will be learning about a variety of marine life including sharks, whales, dolphins, sea stars, octopus and jellyfish. The kids are going to enjoy this unit, especially at the end, when we get to visit the Vancouver Aquarium.

Below are a few important dates to remember throughout the month of April:

Friday, April 18, 2014: Good Friday - NO SCHOOL

Monday, April 21, 2014: Easter Monday - NO SCHOOL

Tuesday, April 29, 2014: Surrey School District Dance Festival - 10:30am - 1:30 pm

Wednesday, April 30, 2014: School Panorama Photo & Early Dismissal

Home Reading

Many Parents have asked about a reading program in our classroom. Unfortunately the school does not have a set program for kindergarten BUT a great site the school has been using is called Raz Kids. Raz Kids includes hundreds of interactive, levelled electronic books spanning 27 levels. Students are able to listen to, read, and even record themselves reading. I will be sending home a piece of paper with the kids this week that will include the login and password for the website. I also know that there may be a lot of information on the website for new users, so if you have any questions as to how to navigate the website, please feel free to email me or drop in and I can help you out. The link to the website is below:

Throughout the month of March and continuing in to April, our class has been practicing a choreographed dance, which we will be performing at the Bell Centre for Performing Arts during the Surrey School District Dance Festival. Included below is a video of our class rehearsing our dance to the song "Happy" by Pharrell Williams. Feel free to play it at home so your child can practice or even show you a few moves.
