"The Spirit of Man" (270) ~Book 3, Ch 3
This quote is significant and relevant to the content of this story because in this dystopia, independence does not exist. It is prohibited. The spirit of man is described as having emotions, feelings, memories, and a sense of judgement. All of those things are not allowed in Oceania. Only the proles may have the spirit of man. Winston has these characteristics until the moment he betrays Julia. The spirit of man ultimately dies signifying the end of hope for the dystopia to return to normal.
