How You Can “Do Your Part” in the COVID-19 Pandemic
It is extremely important that we ALL “do our part” in preventing the spread of COVID-19. The virus (SARS-CoV-2) spreads from respiratory droplets of infected individuals to others. This is why physical (social) distancing and respiratory hygiene is important—cover your cough and sneeze! People who are exposed to the virus may not develop symptoms until 2-14 days after being exposed to the virus.
Symptoms include one or more of the following: fever, dry cough and shortness of breath, fatigue, muscle or body aches, headache, new loss of taste or smell, sore throat, congestion or runny nose, nausea/vomiting/diarrhea
Please note that some individuals have tested positive and have had little or NO symptoms. It is important to treat every person as potentially infectious. People can spread the virus for 48 hours before they have symptoms!
The virus is of greater risk to older adults (over 60 years old) and people with underlying health conditions, such as asthma, diabetes, cancer, heart disease, obesity, people who are immunosuppressed, and pregnant women. Please help protect everyone by doing your part!
General ways to stay healthy:
Practice preventative health measures:
Wash your hands frequently
Eat well balanced meals
Get enough sleep
Exercise
Stay hydrated
Manage your stress- take a break from the media
Students and Families: What can you do?
Wear a face masks or cloth face covering:
On May 6, Governor Baker issued an order requiring face masks or cloth coverings in public places where social distancing is not possible. This applies to everyone over the age of 2 years, unless unable to wear a mask due to a medical condition. Please see this link for instructions on how to wear your face covering and how to remove it. Face coverings decrease the potential for spreading virus, but only when worn correctly. It is important to handle the face mask from the straps/elastics on the side and not on the front of the mask. WASH your hands after taking off your mask. Please see this link from the CDC on cloth face masks. This is an expectation both in school and on bus and van transportation. Gaiters, bandanas and masks with one-way valves will not be allowed.
Observe Physical “Social” Distancing Guidelines
The CDC recommends 6 feet of distance between individuals. The
more closely you interact with others and the longer the interaction time, the higher the risk of COVID-19 spread.
Wash your hands frequently with soap and water frequently for at least 20 seconds. . (See Handwashing Video and Germ Video for younger students). If you are unable to wash your hands, use an alcohol based hand sanitizer. Handwashing should be done often and will be encouraged throughout the school day.
Avoid touching your face, eyes, nose and mouth, where it is easy to spread the virus to yourself.
Knowledge is important, but where you get your knowledge is just as important. There is a list of credible resources listed at the end of this document.
Seasonal flu vaccine is a new requirement for all students. The vaccine must be administered by December 31, 2020. The Sudbury Board of Health will be offering drive through flu clinics this fall. More information will be available soon. You may also contact your pediatrician for more information on vaccine availability.
