Notes from Dr. Miller......
Celebrating Lincoln's Birthday, on Monday, November 11 - No School!
FUN FACTS:
The earliest known observance of Lincoln's birthday occurred in Buffalo, New York, in either 1873 or 1874. Julius Francis (d. 1881), a Buffalo druggist, made it his life's mission to honor the slain president. He repeatedly petitioned Congress to establish Lincoln's birthday as a legal holiday.[5]
The day is marked by traditional wreath-laying ceremonies at Abraham Lincoln Birthplace National Historic Site in Hodgenville, Kentucky, and at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.. The latter has been the site of a ceremony ever since the Memorial was dedicated. Since that event in 1920, observances continue to be organized by the Lincoln Birthday National Commemorative Committee and by the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States (MOLLUS). A wreath is laid on behalf of the President of the United States, a custom also carried out at the grave sites of all deceased U.S. presidents on their birthdays. Lincoln's tomb is in Springfield, Illinois.
Also, As the 2nd semester continues to get underway, there will be changes to the hours for playground supervision; specifically in the afternoon for quarter 4 (budget reductions).
SSC Meeting this week, Tuesday 2/11 - @ 3:30 pm in the library - all are welcome to attend.
Lastly, we are starting to encounter quite of few phone calls for interruption of classrooms. Under my direction, the office staff will take messages or forward messages to the teacher's voicemail only. Additionally, calling students out of the classroom to give items such as lunch, projects, instruments are discouraged. This is out of the request of the classroom teachers, the minimal interruption to support maximizing instructional minutes.
Let us continue to work collaboratively together: Gompers Staff and Gompers Parents for our Gompers Gators success!!
Respectfully & With Kids in Mind, Dr. Miller
