Packing Lunches? Try these tips!
Submitted by Carlee LaRue

When packing your child's lunch, there are a few guidelines to follow. Make sure their lunch follows the MyPlate guidelines, so they have a good serving of protein, vegetables, fruits, dairy, and grains. Mix up their lunch so they get a good variety of vitamins and minerals, while also expanding their taste buds! While at the grocery, plan lunches ahead so you will save time in the morning and are sure that your child will have a balanced meal.
With fruits, grab some fruits that are in season, like berries. Allow your child to taste all kinds of fresh fruits, and avoid prepackaged fruits and fruit strips. These often contain added sugars and artificial flavoring and preservatives.
When choosing vegetables, try to grab something of every color. Dark green leafy vegetables are great too! This is also a great time to get kids to try uncommon vegetables, like jicama.
As for grains, try to make at least half of the grains consumed "whole" grains. Whole grains contain the endosperm, germ, and bran, in contrast to refined grains, which retain only the endosperm. Whole grains contain a lot more vitamins and minerals! To know if your cereal, bread, crackers, or other products are made with whole grain, check the food label. Make sure the word "whole" is on there. If a 12 grain bread doesn't say the word "whole", it isn't a whole grain!
There is a variety of protein options besides deli meat! Deli meat often has an extremely high amount of sodium, so consider mixing it up a bit! Other forms of protein include nuts, hummus, beans, tofu, hard boiled eggs, chicken breast and fish!
A lot of children don't like milk unless it's loaded with chocolate syrup. Make sure they are consuming milk without added sugars and of low fat content, like fat free or 1%. There are other dairy options besides milk that provide calcium, like cheese sticks, cottage cheese, and yogurt."

Kitchen Math
Submitted by Mr. Hopkins, SES Principal
Welcome back to RBB for a wonderful year of exploration, discovery, and growth. Over the last few years, I have focused on literacy in this P2P Newsletter. This year, I am going to switch gears and dive into math. Math is everywhere! We can find it in the store, while driving our car, paying bills, mowing the grass, etc. Along the way, we can easily bring math to life for our children. Today, we find ourselves in the kitchen…
In my family, my children have specific responsibilities when it comes to the kitchen. My daughter is responsible for setting the table while my son clears it. One thing that I started recently was having my daughter, in first grade, skip count when putting out forks. Each fork has four tines. When she puts the fork down at each seat, she counts, “4, 8, 12, 16.” She then places a spoon at each seat. Some days, I ask her to create an A-B pattern (fork, spoon, fork, spoon…) or I mix it up and ask her to make an A-B-B pattern (fork, spoon, spoon, fork, spoon, spoon…). One time, she surprised me and created her A-B pattern by doing “fork up, fork down, fork up, fork down…). These are little things we are able to do to bring math into the kitchen.
As you get ready to eat dinner with your family tonight, how can you bring math into the process? Have a great year!
