Olathe H.E.L.P. Clinic
The H.E.L.P. Clinic is a service provided by the Olathe Public Schools. All services are free of charge to any student enrolled in the Olathe Public Schools, either in a remote environment or onsite.
- Individual and family counseling consists of short-term counseling (six sessions) for students and their families.
- Small group counseling with other grade-level or near grade-level peers serve those who would thrive learning and growing from a group structure. Groups would meet for six sessions.
- Play therapy is a technique where the child's natural means of expression, namely play, is used as a therapeutic method to assist him/her in coping with stress or life difficulties. Play therapy is used effectively at the H.E.L.P. Clinic with children ages 5 to 8 years old. Play therapy may not be used with every child and is available on a limited basis.
- The H.E.L.P. Clinic is staffed by professional school counselors, school psychologists, social workers and other school-based mental health providers. All clinicians are Olathe Public Schools employees or retired employees who have an active license in school mental health. These accredited and experienced professionals have a sincere interest in assisting students and families to better deal with challenges that impact students' abilities to achieve educational success.

The Zones of Regulation
Has your child mentioned the green zone before? What about the blue zone? Yellow zone? Red zone? These are the colors of the Zones of Regulation. The core focus of Zones is to positively support the acquisition of self-regulation skills. When using the Zones, it is important to keep these four basic principles in mind:
- It is natural to experience all of the Zones; there is good or no bad zone (just like there are no good or bad feelings).
- Our Zone is defined by the feelings and internal states we experience on the inside.
- Our behavior is a byproduct of how we manage our Zone; therefore, consequences should not be tied to a Zone.
- The context we are in helps us figure out how to manage our Zone so our behavior meets the demands of the social environment, and in doing so we are able to achieve the tasks we are trying to accomplish and/or the social goals we’ve set for ourselves in that situation.
We will be sharing more about Zones so be sure to keep checking out the newsletters for more information.
Zones of Regulation Highlight
As you know MP utilizes the Zones of Regulation when working with students on emotional regulation, and we want to keep families informed of the verbiage being used.
Below are the two remaining Zones we are highlighting for you this week. Please see past Weekly Updates for further information.
Red Zone: Used to describe an extremely heightened state of alertness. A person may be experiencing anger, rage, explosive behavior, panic, extreme grief, terror, or elation when in the Red Zone and feels a loss of control.
A graphic displaying all four Zones is in the "Repeated Items" section of this Weekly Update.
"Zones" Weekly Highlight
The Blue Zone is used to describe low states of alertness and down feelings such as when one feels sad, tired, sick, or bored.
The Green Zone is used to describe a calm state of alertness. A person may be described as happy, focused, content, or ready to learn when in the Green Zone. This is the zone where optimal learning occurs.
