Shout outs!!!!!
"Words cannot express how thankful, grateful, and most of all appreciative I am to Mr. Cavin Fertil! He came out and did a bilingual assessment on one of the students at my school and truly out did himself! My student couldn't stop talking about how she enjoyed speaking with 'that guy that knew Spanish so well' and looking all his pictures. She also inquired on when he'd be coming back to the school to talk with her about her beloved country, Colombia! Thanks Cavin for being a class act!! You're the best!!" Adrienne L. Singletary
Leslie,
Thanks so much for forwarding me all your info. re: the difference between ELL & a true language impairment!

Compliance Tip of the Month
As a reminder, whenever a Medicaid consent form is generated for a student (either with an IEP or as a result of a finalized DEC 2 consent for evaluation), the parent's consent must be obtained. The parent should sign and return the form indicating whether consent is being provided, by filling in the chosen bubble. A CMS staff member should bubble in the date under the signature or verify that it is bubbled in accurately with no stray marks prior to faxing into EdPlan. If the form is not bubbled in or is bubbled in with stray marks, the fax will not be received in EdPlan. If the form is not signed/completed at the meeting or the fax has not been received in EdPlan, the school’s SLP should follow-up with obtaining consent or correcting the error to ensure the fax is received. Please note, consent forms that are generated with a finalized DEC 2 do not have a barcode. Therefore, a cover sheet will need to be created to fax the signature into EdPlan, and an email should also be sent to kimberly.long@cms.k12.nc.us to inform her of the parent’s indication. An email notification to Kimberly Long is not needed if the consent form with a barcode generated with the IEP is successfully received in EdPlan.!
Wings for Autism® / Wings for All™ Charlotte on April 6th - Event Registration Now Open!
Wings for Autism®/Wings for All® is an airport “rehearsal” program created to alleviate some of the stress that individuals with autism and other intellectual & developmental disabilities and their families experience when traveling by air. The program provides families with the opportunity to practice entering the airport, obtaining boarding passes, going through security, meeting a flight crew, and boarding a plane. The Arc of Union/Cabarrus, Delta Air Lines and The Arc of the United States are co-hosting this 3rd Annual event at Charlotte Douglas International Airport on April 6, 2019 @ 5:15pm. The event is being held in partnership with The Autism Society of North Carolina, Transportation Security Administration (TSA), and Charlotte Douglas International Airport.
Wings for Autism® / Wings for All™ Charlotte is free, but online pre-registration is REQUIRED. https://fs30.formsite.com/wingsforautism/t0rguu7ehg/index.html Don’t delay – this event fills up quickly!
Please note that due to limited availability, participation is reserved for first-time attendees. We respectfully request that if you attended last year, you allow other families the opportunity to experience this unique event. Also, all individuals 18 years old and over are required to bring a valid form of government-issued ID to be allowed through airport security.

LITERACY STRATEGY OF THE MONTH
Visual literacy is the idea that learners today must be able to interpret and understand the multitude of ongoing information presented to them visually. Explicitly teaching students how to access and understand the visual text they encounter is as important as doing so with literary text. The article linked below includes examples of strategies you can utilize to support all learners with working toward mastery of this complex skill.

Message from our Assistive Technology team
Can you please look around your schools and check in the closets in your Extensions Classrooms to see if there are any extra Tech Speak 32 voice output devices that are not being used? If so, can you please email Cindy (cynthia.monroe@cms.k12.nc.us), Diane or Joanna and let them know how many you have? We would like to make arrangements for those unused devices to be returned to Smith.
This is what they look like. They symbols may vary.
