Ms. Karbula says...
I had the chance to sit in on three of Cordova’s classes today, and I just wanted to say what a wonderful teacher she is. Her teacher presence is very calm but firm, and she is totally in control of her classroom. She used specific student names when calling on her scholars, she was constantly monitoring her classroom, and she was always re-engaging her students by asking clear questions that made our scholars think deeply. She waited for them to supply the information and do their own learning, she did not do it for them. She used positive reinforcement when scholars read out loud and when they were sharing their thinking, and she never let small disruptions derail the class. When scholars would start talking, she would wait for them to get back to 100%. She told me she wasn’t feeling her best today, and she still did such an amazing job. It was really nice to get to watch her work and learn from her!
FAMILY MOVIE NIGHT!
A Message from the Director
Greetings Dream Team-
This week I leave you with the poem, entitled, "The Man in the Glass"
The Man in the Glass
When you get what you want in your struggle for self, And the world makes you long for a day, Just go to the mirror and look at yourself,
And see what THAT man has to say. For if it is not your father or mother or wife
Whose judgment upon you must pass. The fellow whose verdict counts most in your life Is the one staring back in the glass.
Some people might think you are a straight shootin' chum and call you a wonderful guy, But the man in the glass says you're only a bum, If you can't look him straight in the eye. He's the fellow to please, never mind all the rest, For he's with you right up to the end. And you have passed your most difficult test If the guy in the glass is your friend
You may fool the whole world down the pathway of years, and get pats on the back as you pass.
But your final reward will be heartaches and tears If you have cheated the man in the glass.
My hope is that this poem will ignite fire and reflection in you to push past all barriers that you encounter! Do so because you deserve it! Our scholars deserve it! Our futures deserve it! Think about what it took for you to get here. Reflect on all that you've faced. Ask yourself, what can I do to make each day better than the day before and do it! Be intentional with your words & actions! Believe, achieve, succeed!
The Dream Team Will Fight!
All My Best,
-Director Parks

3 DAY WEEKEND
Monday, September 3rd- LABOR DAY!!
All VRTs are mandatory and will focus on either RPAs or CA Norming
For this year’s VRTs, each CC has developed a Scope of topics that fluidly connect one session to another. We hope that the intentional organization will make sessions far more relevant to teachers and result in higher levels of engagement, questioning, and collaboration. Because the sessions build on each other over time, missing a VRT will likely put a teacher “out of the loop” in terms of RPA preparation.
Teachers will access the VRT through Skype for Business. An announcement was posted to all Blackboard pages last week with details about how to download Skype for Business and where to go to troubleshoot any downloading issues. A “Skype How-To Guide for Teachers” is also attached to this posting should a teacher still be in need.
It is highly likely that the VRT will conclude with teacher action steps to be completed before the next network collaboration session (VRT or Collab Day). When this is the case, CTLs will post the details to Blackboard and communicate them through a follow-up email. Please check-in with all of your teachers to make sure they have completed their action steps in an appropriate manner.
FAQ
What is the role of the CC?
· Each subject area CC drafts VRT materials and/or content (RPA or Norming focused) and then individually trains their CTLs on the execution of said materials. Additionally, on VRT Wednesdays the CC will call into 2-4 VRT sessions to give the CTL feedback on the execution of the session. When calling in, the CC may note teacher behaviors and follow-up with campus leaders if necessary.
Who should a teacher or leader contact with questions?
· Should a teacher or leader have questions, thoughts, or feedback before or after a VRT, we encourage them to first consult Blackboard (when applicable), then contact their CTL, and finally reach out to the subject area CC.
Who should a teacher notify when absent?
· When absent, the teacher should send a single email notifying the CTL and CC and copying their school leadership team. In the event a teacher is absent, they should access and listen to the VRT recording posted to Blackboard. Absent teachers will still be held accountable to the action steps established in the missed VRT.

A MESSAGE FROM DEAN BAUGHMAN
Instructional Focus: Checks for Understanding- (See Questioning Document in the Email)
As we begin our first full week of instruction it is vital that we are ensuring scholar mastery and understanding. Our focus this week will be checks for understanding. As you progress through your lesson it is vital that you make periodic observations and verbal checks for scholars to ensure they are receiving the information you are teaching them. Below are some strategies that can help with checks for understanding.
1. Ensure you are providing enough Guided and Independent Practice
a. This way you can circulate to all scholars and ensure they are on the right track and mastering what is in front of them. Also, this will help with any interventions you may need to put in place for that particular objective – be proactive not reactive
2. Make it useful
a. The true test is whether or not you can adjust your course or continue as planned based on the information received in each check. Do you need to stop and start over? Pull a few students? Re-teach or move on?
i. Ways to adjust ( this is not all encompassing)
1. Try a different mode of instruction – i.e. if you are taking guided notes, switch to modeling concepts or a visual analysis
2. Break scholars into small groups for peer tutoring
3. Increase models and modes of practice during independent practice with increased circulation
3. Practice Frequency
a. Check for understanding a multiple points during INM (intro to new material)
4. Think-write-pair-share
a. Scholars take a few minutes to think about the question or prompt. After, scholars individually write their answer. Next, pair up with a designated partner and compare thoughts or explanations to your prompt, then share out. While they are doing this circulate to make sure the conversations stay on topic.
5. Avoid Yes/No Questions
Avoid yes/no questions and phrases like “Does this make sense?” In response to these questions scholars usually answer “yes.” To help scholars grasp ideas in class, ask pointed questions that require scholars to use their own knowledge.
A MESSAGE FROM DEAN SMALLS
Sometimes the battle is the old you vs. the new you. Dare to break out of the box!
Upcoming Events
A. College Gear Day: August 28, 2018 Scholars are able to wear paraphernalia from the college of their choice with jeans.
THE CULTURAL FOCUS
The Cultural Focus for this week will be to continuously build a positive, joyful, and collaborative environment that all scholars actively contribute. This means that we must start with “At First Sight”. Our scholars thrive off of consistency. Continue to greet them and show them that you care even if you do not get the same response in return. Remember children don’t want to know what you know until they first know that you care. Continue to be steadfast in making sure that we maintain high academic and behavioral expectations. If there are scholars not meeting expectations, remind them of the system and continue to practice! As a reminder, before scholars enter the classroom teacher actions are as follows:
- Making sure all scholars are 1 square away from the wall
- Level 0
- Remind scholars to be prepared: uniform (shirts tucked in, Hampton approved jackets and approved backpacks), supplies and mindset.
- If the backpack is not clear, it is not allowed in the class!
As we continue to have another great week, I appreciate your support, effort, time and diligence in making sure our scholars are successful inside the classroom and outside of the classroom.
A Message from Special Education Coordinator Mrs. Jones
Special Populations
What’s an IEP?
The acronym IEP stands for Individualized Education Program. This is a written document that describes the educational program designed to meet a child’s individual needs. Every child who receives special education must have an IEP. The IEP has two general purposes: (1) to set learning goals for your child; and (2) to state the supports and services that the school district will provide for your child.
Filling out the blue sheet on a scholar is very important, you must list their strengths and weakness, that you have collected from observations, test, and data.
