Week 1 - Term 2 (Thursday 22 April 2021)
Dear Parents/Guardians
Term 2 is well underway and it is good to be able to welcome everyone back to another exciting school term, albeit a much longer one. Holidays will not be with us until Monday 5 July 2021, amazing really.
As I write, the Premier has announced a three day lockdown which will conclude Monday evening, meaning school will resume as normal on Tuesday 27 April 2021. I will make contact with you if this changes
It is all about NAPLAN this term. (Starting Tuesday 11 May 2021)
NAPLAN (The National Assessment Programme -Literacy and Numeracy)
In three weeks, NAPLAN Online will be administered to our students in Years 3 and 5. NAPLAN measures the performance of educational programs, schools and each student’s literacy and numeracy achievements against benchmarks. In short, the aim of NAPLAN is to ensure that students’ and the nation’s literacy and numeracy skills are improving.
NAPLAN is good at measuring differences and change over time.
NAPLAN gives us a picture of several aspects of students’ learning. These include: their performance under test conditions, their basic use of punctuation, grammar, spelling, numeracy skills and writing an exposition or narrative text. NAPLAN can, importantly, track a student’s improvement, or lack thereof, from one exam to the next. It can also highlight changes, although it cannot specify the factors involved in it.
NAPLAN cannot measure creativity or engagement.
Despite all that NAPLAN can measure, it only tells part of the story of literacy and numeracy achievement. NAPLAN measures a narrow skill set on one particular day of the year. It does not represent student achievements across the year, nor across the breadth of the curriculum which schools use. It also does not measure engagement in learning. Engagement can be noticed in the excitement a student has for a learning activity, or their willingness to engage in numeracy or literacy tasks. NAPLAN has a narrow view of literacy, numeracy and writing which is not reflected in the rich learning that occurs in our classrooms.
NAPLAN is unable to gather a teachers’ contextual knowledge about the students and the learning environment. NAPLAN does not capture innovation, creativity, risk, originality and joy. Hence NAPLAN is best viewed as one assessment, on one day, of a child’s achievement. It is not the total and conclusive summary of a child’s literacy and numeracy achievements for the whole year.
Congratulations to all involved in our Yr 6 Camp at Woodman Point. I visited the camp site twice to experience the vibe, and it was all good. My second visit was interesting as the pace seemed a little slower, and the staff and parent helpers were all wearing sunglasses. I guess little sleep and over-excited children can have an impact on one's disposition. I'm sure if you have a child in Yr 6 they will sleep well this weekend, and have so many wonderful stories to share with you.
The Lord be with you.
Chris.
We should pray
Dear Lord, fill us with Your love and faithfulness and a sense of Your presence in our lives. Give us hope and strengthen us to trust in You always.

ANZAC Day Youth Parade
Yesterday the Year Fives joined with thirty three other schools in the Cockburn district in an Anzac Day March and Service in Spearwood. Sixteen hundred people gathered to honour those that gave their lives in defence of our beautiful country.
A wreath was laid by Andrew and Jacob on behalf of the St Jerome's Community.
We were extremely proud to be part of this service.
Uniform Shop News
A reminder that in Term 2 & 3 our students are wearing winter uniform. The uniform requirements can be found on our website. Briefly, it means the girls will change from the summer dress into the white shirt with either the tunic or skirt. (Sizing will follow the size of the summer dress/everyday clothing worn). Our boys can wear the grey trousers or continue in the grey shorts. Our Track suit pants can be incorporated into the sports and pre-primary uniform.
Orders can be placed via e-mail to: uniform@stjeromes.wa.edu.au or phoned through, obviously on the days the shop is open (Tues & Thurs 8.15am to 3.30pm). You will need to provide your child’s name and class, sizes required and card details for payment please. Orders will be sent to class message baskets in our admin. building, these are generally collected by classes by the end of the day. Large orders will be placed at Reception for collection. If there are any queries please give us a call.

Gospel John 10:11-18
The good shepherd is one who lays down his life for his sheep
Jesus said:
‘I am the good shepherd:
the good shepherd is one who lays down his life for his sheep.
The hired man, since he is not the shepherd
and the sheep do not belong to him,
abandons the sheep and runs away
as soon as he sees a wolf coming,
and then the wolf attacks and scatters the sheep;
this is because he is only a hired man
and has no concern for the sheep.
‘I am the good shepherd;
I know my own
and my own know me,
just as the Father knows me
and I know the Father;
and I lay down my life for my sheep.
And there are other sheep I have
that are not of this fold,
and these I have to lead as well.
They too will listen to my voice,
and there will be only one flock,
and one shepherd.
‘The Father loves me,
because I lay down my life
in order to take it up again.
No one takes it from me;
I lay it down of my own free will,
and as it is in my power to lay it down,
so it is in my power to take it up again;
and this is the command I have been given by my Father.’

Dental health - Keep your child's teeth healthy
Teeth are important possessions. Here are some tips for keeping them healthy.
· Clean teeth, gums and tongue at least twice a day with a soft toothbrush. Parents should supervise tooth brushing until children are 8 or 9 years old as children do not have the dexterity to brush the molars properly until then.
· Adults and children should use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Toothpaste should be spat out after brushing and never eaten or swallowed. Do not rinse your mouth out with water after brushing your teeth.
· Rinse your toothbrush thoroughly after brushing and store it hygienically. Replace your toothbrush regularly.
· Older children and adults should floss their teeth daily.
· Eating and drinking healthily is important for keeping your teeth healthy – try to keep away from too much sugar, especially between meals.
