What is it?
- structural birth defect
- causes abnormalities of the foot
- appearance of a twisted or out of shape foot.
- tissues connecting to the bones and muscles in the foot are shorter than usual
- present at birth
Causes & Complications
- cause is unknown
- environment of the mother while pregnant plays a role
- linked to Women who smoke during pregnancy
- the baby is more likely too have if parents did
- no complications until child begins to walk and stand
Testing, Treatment, & life outlook
- easy for doctor to determine if child has it
- Doctors are usually successful in treating it
- three types of treatment, "stretching & casting", "stretching & taping", and surgery if needed
- If left untreated the child will develop Arthritis, and inability to walk normally
Prevention
- all you can do is limit the baby's risks by not doing any of the following
- Pregnant women shouldn't smoke, or spend time in smoking areas
- Pregnant women shouldn't drink alcohol, or take any illegal drugs
- pregnant women shouldn't take any Medication without doctor consent
