Catkins Fundraiser
Mrs. Corbett led a group of students on a fundraiser to help the Catkins Animal Rescue. Students did a wonderful job collecting much-needed supplies. The following items were collected by our students.
- Kitty litter
- Cat food (both wet and dry)
- Dog food (both wet and dry)
- Dog and Cat treats
- Paper Towel
- Bottles of bleach.
Fire Drill
- Maps were used to detail the plan out of the classroom and building.
- Teachers and students discussed specific doors they must use when exiting the building.
- How should students behave during a drill?
- What are the reasons why a fire alarm might go off?
- What is the main route for exiting the classroom and building?
- What are the secondary route options?
- How would you respond when exiting the room or building if there were obstacles in your way?
- What would you do if you were outside the classroom when the drill went off?
Sports Update
- Congratulations to senior Kristina Peterson for placing 18th on the vault at this year's Gymnastics State Tournament.
- Volleyball and football have started their seasons.

- At one point this year we had 58 students that were all-virtual. We currently have 43 all-virtual students. We are getting 3 more students to attend school on campus at the beginning of the fourth quarter.
- The end of the third quarter is March 25.

From Missing to Dead: CSIs Continue
Late fall we reported the demise of one of our four collared ruffed grouse, Windsor, who was reduced to a few wet feathers and an empty tracking device. Using evidence at the scene, we hypothesized that a raptor plucked him from the sunny trail.
Since Christmas, Brian, who maps the birds’ locations on Google Earth so we can see the birds’ ranges, noticed two other ruffed grouse, Benson, and Alberto, in exactly the same triangles two weeks in a row. With both birds appearing stationary, a group of us trekked into the deep snow to flush both birds. We used the tracking equipment to make smaller and smaller triangles to pinpoint the birds’ locations.
In tracking Alberto, the smallest triangle led us to a snow-covered area on the ridge, and no bird flushed. Students commenced to digging through the snow as they now knew Alberto was dead (see photo at right). What they found was a small area of blood and a small pile of feathers.
In Benson’s case, Gii broke the tracking collar free from a block of ice about a foot below the surface. Benson’s body remained encased in ice, and we were unable to pull it free. In this next week, students will continue their CSI-type investigation at both crime scenes to document observations, collect evidence, and confirm the cause of death for both birds.
With our last bird, Tracy, we can get weak signals on her location most of the year. We hypothesized she expanded her territory out of range of our equipment; however, with recent findings of three of the four birds dead, along with another random grouse-raptor kill from last fall, students want to follow any faint signals they have to confirm Tracy’s MIA status.
