Mrs. Osika's Class At Joan Martin Are Loving Their Brain!
Brain Based Learning
By: Mrs. Osika’s Third Grade Class
Parents and teachers should learn about the brain because they need to teach their children and students about it. When students learn about their brains, they understand why they react the way they do. They also learn ways to control their reactions.
There are three main parts of the brain that we learned about, and they are the prefrontal cortex, the hippocampus, and the amygdala. The prefrontal cortex is the part in your forehead. We use the nickname Tex (the Smart Sheriff) to help us remember the prefrontal cortex. Its job is to help us make smart choices and control our emotions and reactions. The hippocampus stores your memories. We use the nickname Hippo (The Librarian) for the hippocampus. If the amygdala takes over the hippocampus can’t do its job, which makes it hard to learn or remember information. The amygdala alerts you when you are in danger, but sometimes it will alert you when it doesn’t need to. The amygdala is in the middle of your brain. The nickname for the amygdala is Amy (the Jumpy Superhero).
It’s important to know about the amygdala so it won’t be afraid of a threat that is not there. If the amygdala is on high alert, you can’t think or make memories. The other parts of your brain can’t do their jobs. The amygdala puts you in fight, flight, or freeze mode, in order to keep you safe. When you go into fight, flight, or freeze mode all the blood goes to the parts of your body that would help you to escape danger. That means there is not as much blood going to the areas that help you learn or think. This is not good if you are in this mode when there is no actual danger.
It’s important to know about the prefrontal cortex because you can use it to calm down your amygdala and help you make smart choices. It is important to know about the hippocampus because it helps make and store important memories.
There are lots of strategies you can use to calm down your amygdala. These include:
- Take deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth.
- Drink water (which forces you to breathe).
- Do yoga
- Draw. There is a special kind of drawing called bilateral drawing that we practiced in class (see pictures).
- Think about something that makes you happy.
Steps for bilateral drawing/scribbling
1. Have a coloring tool in each hand with the paper in front of you.
2. Draw horizontal lines until teacher says stop.
3. Draw vertical lines until teacher says stop.
4. Draw arcs until teacher says stop.
5. Draw circles until teacher says stop.
6. Draw dots until teacher says stop.
7. Look at your drawing and give it a title.
8. Look at your drawing and notice if it reminds you of anything or tells you anything about yourself.
YouthMover, Brandon Lee White In Our Schools!
He's back and we are Owning It! This year @YouthMover, Brandon Lee White will be visiting all of our schools to encourage and motivate students to build positive character, teamwork, courage, self-discipline, exercise, and anti-bullying in a fun, energetic, humorous way! As a former professional ballroom dancer and entertainer, he uses sports, dance, and pop-culture to relate to students of all ages! He creates a positive impact on and moves students so that they can grow and move toward success. Our Brickies did a great job "Owning It" and are encouraged to sign their school banner (pictured above) by taking the personalized School City of Hobart pledge:
"I pledge to embody the qualities of Yohan and live out what it means to be a Brickie: kindness, integrity, responsibility, determination, and pride to build a better world starting with me."
Want to know more about him? Read what former Middle School Assistant Principal, now High School Co-Principal, Mrs. Scheuneman has to say about him after his visit last year and the impact that he made!
I had the pleasure of sitting down with Brandon after his visit to HMS last year. I am a huge fan of his message and his mission, and I never would have believed that he could get 300 8th graders to swing dance in the gym. It was one of my favorite moments ever. What was more impressive, though, was that for the rest of the year, students talked about “that time we danced.” They would even greet each other in the halls with, “Hi, person I danced with.” This seems like a small thing, but it’s a big deal. Brandon has the ability to help people see each other and themselves, to realize they are part of the same team, and to just go ahead and own it. Sometimes owning it is easy, and sometimes it’s not. I love that we had someone come in this school year to start this conversation again. And he is not just coming one time... we have the pleasure of working with Brandon throughout the whole year, for a total of 5 visits. I love the way the Own It message will be threaded into our days at HHS. I can’t wait to see what this school year and experience will bring.
"The Own It Movement provides character and leadership development to empower students to take ownership of who they are, what they want, and what holds them back."

SCOH's MISSION through partnership with the Own It movement:
