Hydroelectric energy
By-Courtney and Jordan
How this resource is formed?
This energy is formed from moving water.
Hydroelectric energy, or hydro power is a renewable energy.
Hydro means water and that means hydro electric is a water energy and water energy is renewable.
How is hydro power used?
Hydropower was used thousands of years ago to turn paddle wheels to help grind grain. The nations first industrial use of hydropower to generate electricity occurred in 1880 , when 16 brush lamps were powered using a water turbine.
Advantages and disadvantages
Availability - 52% of the nation's renewable electricity.7% of total electricity generation.
Cost- About 0.85 cents per kilowatt-hour.
Pollution- Minimal Pollution.
Advantages- Hydropower is fueled by water, so it is a clean fuel source, meaning it won't pollute the air like power plants that burn fossil fuels.
Disadvantages- Fish population can be impacted if fish can't migrate upstream past impoundment dams to spawning ground or if they can't migrate downstream.
Availability (disadvantage)- Hydropower availability would worsen when there was a drought.
Where is this resource found most abundantly?
Latin America, Central Africa, India and China.
Are there any harmful things to Earth from this energy?
Hydropower plants blocking the flow of rivers.
