Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month
In the month of May, Riverside Elementary celebrated Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage with guests from Willard library, the community, and a professor from Western Michigan University. Miss Mawi from Willard Library, taught the first grade students how to sing in Burmese, while talking about song and dance from Myanmar. Miss Clara, a kindergarten parent, read a book to students in Hakha Chin and talked to the students about the traditional clothing worn in Burma. Dr. Protacio took the students on a virtual field trip to the Philippines. She also gifted each classroom library with books that represent Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders. The students also enjoyed tea from Burma, candy from Japan, cookies from China, and candy from the Pacific Islands. Students also created crafts such as the Koinobori Fish, Hina Dolls, Samurai hats, and Chinese fans while learning about the traditions of the cultures.
