Oxycodone: What is it?

Oxycodone is a prescription drug prescribed for moderate and severe pain. It comes in tablet form and must be swallowed whole to be completely effective. When misused it is commonly crushed and inhaled with a straw of injected into the bloodstream. Oxycodone is a semi-synthetic opiate that word by blocking pain signals to the brain transmitted by the spinal cord. It effects the brain stem and the limbic system.

Psychological & Physical effects

Because oxycodone is a pain killer, it works to dull pain. However, if misused, it will dull other senses and improve mood while easing anxiety.Some short term effect are that the drug blocks pain signals to the brain, so one who is high off oxycodon might not realise if they get hurt. Oxycodone also causes drowsiness, making it easier for one to sleep if they are in intense pain, for instance. One who abuses the drug for a long time will become addicted and physically dependent on the drug, causing them to not be able to go about their life normally unless they are on the drug. One may also have respiratory issues and not be able to breathe correctly, and they may become light headed from lack of oxygen. One's tolerance level to drugs will also rise, making it easier for them to take and get addicted to oxycodone and other drugs more easily. One may even go into cardiac arrest and die if they overdose. One taking oxycodone will also experience nausea and constipation. The duration of the effect depends on how long/ how much one is ingesting the drug.
