Time for the Turnaround
You know what time it is? Yes, it is Wednesday, and on top of that, it's time for some turnaround!
Take a few minutes to evaluate the direction you are headed.
- What direction are you traveling on your own personal wellness journey?
- What detours have you taken?
- What doctors orders have you not followed?
Taking our own turnaround will lead us to a longer, happier, more fulfilled life. We encourage you to seek any direction you are not happy with and turn about! Here is an example from our own Tony Stajduhar:
Member highlight: "Tony's Turnaround" with Tony Stajduhar
1. Congrats on your recent weight-loss efforts and your overall health! You were telling me about a doctor's visit you had several weeks ago that had an impact on your life. Would you mind sharing some of that conversation?
My doctor decided to do a very broad blood panel for my physical. She called me in to meet and informed me that my cholesterol was high, my BP was elevated and that the cholesterol was also smaller particles making it even more dangerous. In other words, she told me that my risk factor for heart attack was very high. When she looked at my past, she was convinced that I could work at getting it under control by making some changes. She told me to cut out the bad carbs and get back in the gym. She said she would retest in 90-120 days, which we are quickly approaching. She said the alternative was to get on a drug regimen to control things. I chose the former. I also thought about my beautiful family and realized I want to be here for them and be able to be a grandpa someday. My kids missed that with my Dad, and I just don’t want to repeat that.
2. What specific steps have you taken recently? What have been the results?
I just can’t work out the way I did 6 years ago (2 hours/day 6 days/wk) due to my travel and work schedule, and I’m getting older every day as well. But I have done my best to get in every day I’m in town but only for about 45-60 minutes per workout. I combine cardio with some weight training. If I’m on the road for more than a couple of days, I take my clothes with me and try to, at a minimum, get in cardio. I have been extremely good with the diet. I seem to have strong will power when it comes to this part once I set my mind to it. So, after 3 months, I have dropped somewhere between 20-25 pounds (didn’t get my exact weight when I started). I still want to drop another 10 down to 190. She is convinced that these things will dramatically affect my numbers. I guess we will see in a couple of weeks.
3. How do prioritize your solid business schedule and your training efforts?
I just make up my mind to find some time during the day when I’m here to get it in. Sometimes it is early, sometimes later, but I do my best to get it in. I also try to get in at least 1 weekend day. My schedule right now is crazier than ever, but I just don’t use it as an excuse anymore.
4. What encouragement would give others to help with their own turn-a-round?
The best advice I can give is to try not to let yourself get where I got to (35 pounds in 6 years). If you are already there, find out what type of diet your doctor recommends. I’ve heard several theories. One of my friends was in the same boat, and he was told to cut out red meat, cheese, etc but carbs were fine. He too is losing weight. But the key is controlling your diet somehow. It is still very simple, lower caloric intake with more fat burning and muscle building exercise. I also go against old sage advice, and I weigh myself almost every morning at the same time. This helps me personally keep in check and makes me think about what I’m doing that day if I am up a pound. It also feels great to see the scale going down every week. Last but not least, surround yourself with supportive people who want you to get better as well.
We will check back with Tony for his final report! Thanks Tony!
Fit Group Update from Drop 10 & Mindful Meditation @ Work
“Love, love, love the meditation practices on Wednesdays. I handle so much and am pulled in so many different directions, and to be able to ‘let it all go’ and learn how to quiet the mind is fantastically restorative and rewarding. I almost feel like I’ve had a 30 minute nap when I walk out of there. Love Karen!”

*Mindful Meditation @ Work meets every Wednesday @ 3pm in the Coliseum spa room.
"As part of the Drop 10 Challenge, I know that I have to be accountable to myself. With all of the temptations out there, birthday cake, cookies, etc., I have to ask myself is that bite worth it? I also have a goal in mind that I am striving to reach – so I’ve broken it down into achievable milestones. And as I’m walking or running that 5K, I just tell myself it’s one step at a time."
