Two shoes went clomp clomp...
If you're not familiar with the story it is a repetitive, engaging tale about a little old lady who claims she is not afraid of anything. One day this lady goes for a walk in the woods and upon returning towards home encounters first a pair of shoes that go CLOMP CLOMP, then a pair of pants that go WIGGLE WIGGLE, a shirt that goes SHAKE SHAKE and so on until she has a pair of shoes, pants, shirt, gloves, hat, and a big pumpkin head following her home. She runs inside her house, locks the door and rocks in her chair. She is finally calming down when she hears a knock at the door. When she opens it she hears two shoes go CLOMP CLOMP, one pair of pants go WIGGLE WIGGLE, one shirt go SHAKE SHAKE, two gloves go CLAP CLAP, one hat go NOD NOD and one pumpkin head say BOO BOO. She discovers that they are only interested in scaring her and she instead suggests they find a better job and they work together to make a great scarecrow.
The kids were so enthusiastic doing the repetitive actions and words! It was fun to see their excitement and joy around this classic story. We also shared a book called Halloween Hustle by Charlotte Gunnufson.
A funny story: In one class we were just to the part in the first book where the big pumpkin head appears and says BOO BOO when the electricity went off in the building. No one became frightened but we all looked around and thought that the timing was pretty interesting! We read the second book in the quiet of the somewhat darker school and then the lights all came back on.
During centers time this week I opened up a listening center for the first graders and they loved it! Several students were able to listen to There Was an Old Lady who Swallowed a Bat and a few chose to listen to Where the Wild Things Are. The students are working on so many amazing things during centers time. They are building, illustrating, working on puzzles, reading books, listening to books and working on sight words.
Another great time in the library! Please let me know if you have any questions: jennybrenner@ccaschools.org
