Reading at home

I recently found the illustration above. It highlights the crucial piece that reading at home plays in the educational growth of our students. I know that life can get hectic and crazy and schedules can get tight;however, finding the time to consistently read with your child will have a huge impact on their academic success. I struggle at times in my own home to carve out reading time each evening but this illustration has served as a reminder that we need to make it a priority in our schedule. I hope that you are able to find a way to place reading in your daily schedule as well.

If you need help with adding books to your home library please feel free to contact your child's teacher, Mrs. Neels in the library, or the office. The Little Free Library is always open in front of the Intermediate building and we would be more than happy to send books home with your child.

Thank you for all that you have done and continue to do to support the Winfield School District, Winterfield Intermediate, The Warrior Way and our young readers!

As always please call, email or stop by the office if you have any questions, concerns or suggestions.

Proud to be a Warrior,

Jeff Schultz

Cold weather is here

With the cold weather upon us we wanted to take a moment to remind our families of the importance of proper winter attire for all of our young Warriors. Please make sure that your child comes to school dressed for the weather each day. We will continue to hold outdoor recess when possible. If you are in need of any assistance in getting a coat for any of our students please contact the office and we will assist you in making sure all of our Warriors are prepared for the cold weather ahead of us.

You can find the information below on the district website. It's bright and sunny out right now but we all know the cold weather will be here at some point.

Gaming Club!

This was a great idea brought to us by Carter in Mrs. Riley's class. He presented the idea to me and the more we talked I realized this was an opportunity to do more than just allow kids to play games after school. The opportunity to socialize with peers who they may not be able to for any number of reasons was all the motivation we needed to offer the gaming club at Winfield Intermediate. We already have nearly 30 students signed up and have 2 different gaming systems that are set to be donated. A big thank you to Mrs. Baker and Mrs. Long for stepping up to sponsor the club.

The Counselor's Corner

Hello Warriors!

The lesson this month has to do with the Growth Mindset (with a reminder about peer mistreatment report forms).

Basically in a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them. They also believe that talent alone creates success—without effort. Words used such as “I can’t do this”, “I messed up” or “I stink at math” fall into this category.

In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment. Changing the “I can’t do this” or “I stink at math” into “What am I missing?”, “I can learn from my mistakes” or “I’m going to use some of the strategies I’ve learned in Math” can drastically change the outcomes students have regarding their deficiencies.

Please let me know if you have any questions or if I can assist you and your family in any way.
