MYP update of the week

In Foundations classes this week, students have started to watch a documentary called Room to Breathe. This film takes place in a San Francisco public middle school and follows the students as they are introduced to mindfulness meditation practices. Students discussed the documentary and how we can use similar mindfulness practices to help us become more balanced, which will help students focus and be more successful in school and in life.

This week at Ramsey

Starting next week 7th-grade students will have the opportunity to apply for Where Everybody Belongs (WEB), a student leadership group that helps mentor 6th-grade students. Encourage your 7th-grade students to apply.

Ms. Ludwig's Pre-Algebra classes are working on IB assessment called the Putt Putt Project. In this project students design miniature golf courses and create a contractor proposal for the city of "Polygon". Some students are finding creative ways to use their iPads for digital modeling. We will be celebrating Pi Day next week as well as taking a few days use our area of a circle formula and percent proportions to explore the distribution of community businesses and resources. Our classes will be exploring data from the location of the 1992 Los Angeles riots and a suburban "average" town outside Chicago in the same year. After examining the data we will then make a hypothesis and perform the same calculations for Saint Paul.

In Ms. Fontana's ELA Workshop 7 class, we started writing an argument essay about the topic that students have been researching this quarter. We are focusing on elaborating on our argument and analyzing the evidence that students are including.

The Ramsey Band and Orchestra just finished two FANTASTIC showings at Central High School's Tri-School Concerts! Way to go Ramsey musicians!! Then next band concert, which will include the Varsity and Concert Bands, will be April 27, and the next orchestra concert (which will also include the jazz band) will be May 25. Both concerts are at 6:30, here at Ramsey.

French Immersion 6 have begun a unit entitled Bon app├ętit!. French is taught using a communicative/experiential approach in which students are involved in real-life, meaningful interaction in French. Please have a conversation with your student about how important it is that s/he makes the effort to use French at all time in French class. Everyone is needed. Our goal is to achieve a high degree of fluency.
At the end of the unit, students demonstrate their own recipe for a favorite dish as part of a cooking show. You can support your child's learning by reviewing vocabulary with him/her (notability or notebook), by providing him/her with a copy of the recipe for a favorite dish, by collecting the necessary ingredients and utensils to demonstrate the recipe to the class and by having your student practice the oral presentation with you. Thanks for your support! Your interest and support promote the message that learning and improving our other language (French) is important.
Thank you to the 8th and 6th grades Immersion families for covering the cost of participating in the National French Contest. There are still a few students that say they forgot. It is not too late: $7.00.
