Where We Are Proud To Be SHARKS!
June 8, 2019
This is our last Scoop newsletter of the 2018-2019 school year. It has been a pleasure to share all the learning experiences, the pictures, and the videos from the classrooms and special events. We will send a monthly letter starting in July to provide updates on summer happenings, upcoming dates, and information for the 2019-2020 school year.
As we close out this year, we have a poster up in school that reads, "The countdown is on, 86 (#) days until the first day of school!" Even though we know that students and staff are looking forward to spending time enjoying the summer, we also want our students to know how excited we are to be back learning for, with, and from all of them in September. We will return to weekly editions of the Scoop to share all of this with you as well.
To all: rest, rejuvenate, and spend time with the people that mean the most to you.
To all of our students: Remember to continue to read, write, and use your math skills in real-world places throughout the summer, but most of all-go out to play and ENJOY!
See you soon!

Weekly Article: "Ask Me About..."
Each week the grade level teams will publish two to three statements for caregivers to use as conversation starters with their child(ren). Although the Scoop is a great place to see and discuss end-of-learning products, these "ask me about" conversation starters will help promote discussions about current learning. For additional questions to ask your child about school, please visit "Understood's" article:

SHARK Shout Out

SHARK Shout Out
A SHARK Shout Out from the American Heart Association
Hello,
I just wanted to take a moment to thank you both for facilitating the continued support that the Chatham students & families provide to the American Heart Association.
Kristen, it’s an absolute pleasure to work with you. Thank you for going above and beyond your regular teaching duties to implement this community service learning program - the kids are lucky to have you there in the gym.
It’s an understatement to say we appreciate the $3,591.00 that your school community raised, but even more compelling are the number of students who took their health into their own hands and challenged themselves to live a healthier life. You had 8 students take the challenge to exercise for at least 60 minutes a day and 4 students challenged themselves to choose water over sugary beverages. 15 students combined the physical heart with the social-emotional heart and challenged themselves to do a kind deed daily. Impressive.
We are so grateful for your partnership in building a stronger and healthier community.
Wishing you both a wonderful summer filled with smiles!
Fondly,
Lindsay

Sea Creature Fun in PreK
Sea Creature Fun
On Friday and Monday, we had a wonderful opportunity to study sea creatures up close. The afternoon students went to the beach to explore sea creatures. On Monday, Mr. and Mrs. Wright came to preschool with oysters, muscles, little neck clams, quahogs, a horseshoe crab, and lots of little green crabs.
This week we said goodbye to Garbo and Toffee our therapy dogs for the summer months. They have been such a wonderful addition to our classroom. We will say goodbye to Sky the therapy dog next week.
At the academic and art tables this week, we decorated a Rainbow Fish, we decorated folders and picture stands. At the academic tables, we learned our letters during letter bingo, and we learned the sound of the letter "W" and drew the letter.
Students are learning to do some independent writing at the writing table. They are writing notes to each other and using scissors to cut out creatures. This is a huge milestone for a lot of the students learning to read and spell.

After the show, we were treated to another Proud to be a SHARK announcement from CES Student Council:
Pennies for Peace is a service-learning program that is designed to broaden students' cultural horizons while teaching them about their capacities as philanthropists- one penny at a time. This program is part of the Central Asia Institute, a nonprofit organization that promotes community-based education and literacy programs in areas of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Tajikistan- serving more than 100,000 students! In these villages, 12 pennies can buy a pencil start an education, and transform a life. In regions where the right to an education and better future are threatened every day, a pencil can empower a child to read, write, and learn!
CES students have dedicated their time this past month to participate in this campaign, and we are happy to announce that together, as a school community, we are donating a total of $202.77 to the organization. We hope this campaign will continue to empower our students to be future learners and philanthropists by working together as a global family dedicated to peace! Go sharks!
During the event, our Kindness Club also unveiled the mural they created with all the plastic, soda tops that were donated this year-Recycle, Reuse, and Repurpose!
To close our last of the year community event, we celebrated sending off our rising grade 5 students with a song, and they reciprocated with a song for all of the students.
Haiku Poetry From Ms. Flynn's Room:
What am I ?
Fluffy, pointy ears
Long, soft, furry, orange tail
Sneaky, clever, sly
By: B.R.
What am I ?
I have great eyesight
I hunt fish, rats, rabbits, mice
I am a smart bird
By: L.G.
What am I ?
I'm stealthy at night
I hunt squirrels and chipmunks
Can be seen at night

This month's "Kindness Club" members contributing the most acts of "kindness" during the month of May.
“Kindness Club” Monthly Report May:
This month the “Kindness Club” worked very hard on a special project they have dedicated to our school. Over the past six months parents and students have helped the “Kindness Club” to make this project a reality by collecting colorful plastic caps. With artistic help from Mrs. Funk, the “Kindness Club” was able to make a recycled plastic cap mural.
There are over 100 members in the “Kindness Club.” This month alone 78 members completed 313 acts of “kindness” in just 22 days of school during the month of May.
Each month, the “Kindness Club” recognizes and celebrates the top three students in each grade who completed the most acts of “kindness” during the month. See those members pictured above.
Thank you and remember “Kindness Counts.”

Here are a few highlights from field day. Thank you, Mrs. Smith, for all of your hard work. We truly appreciate you!
