Welcome Back Sonia Sotomayor Families!

We are so excited to have students, staff, and families back in our building for another great year of learning and growing together! This year, we have ramped up our Open House to make it a fun welcome-back-to-school party on our playground! There will be food trucks for families to purchase dinner, there will be music, there will be games, there will be a photo booth, there will be popsicles provided by the PTO, and more! We will have shaded tables on the playground for families to enjoy dinner either before or after they meet their teacher and classmates (food trucks will be serving 4:00-7:00 pm).

Teachers will be available to meet students and families in their classroom from 4:00-6:00 pm. Please see the posted class lists in each of the grade level hallways or in our cafeteria. Stop by the PTO table to learn more about how you can volunteer for school events and check out the spirit wear shop. Stop by the Parent Advocates for Spanish Immersion (PASI) table to learn how you can support our K-12 Spanish Immersion Program that is now located in five schools in our district!

Check out our stunning new Outdoor Classroom on the east side of the school! Our students raised funds through our Boosterthon Dance Fit event last March, and Nick Lease with Pebble Beach Landscaping designed and installed the classroom, as well as donated much of the materials!! We are thrilled to have an alternate learning space for our students and staff to enjoy in a variety of ways.

Jana Greenfield, Dean of Students, and I will be giving a short presentation in the gymnasium at 4:15 and repeat it at 5:15. We are proud to share some results from our student assessments from last spring as well as share some logistics for the school year!

Open House

We are excited to see all the Sonia Sotomayor families at our Open House on Tuesday, August 24, from 4:00-6:00 pm. During the event, students will be able to meet their teachers and tour the school. Students may bring school supplies to their classrooms during the Open House. The PTO and PASI will also be present to provide information about their programs. Food trucks will also be available for food purchases. We look forward to an afternoon full of back-to-school fun!

School Supply Lists

Supply lists for each grade level can be found here. School supplies can be dropped off during our Open House.

If you purchased supplies through First Day, your child's supply box will be ready for them at school on the first day.

Drop-Off and Pick-Up Procedures

If you are dropping off your student(s) for breakfast in the morning, they may enter through the front doors at 7:30. Only students eating breakfast should enter through the front doors. A child must be present by 7:45 in order to receive breakfast. Students not eating breakfast will enter through the playground doors (south side of the building), which open at 7:45. School begins at 7:55 am.

Students may also be dropped off by using the drop-off lanes on the west and east sides of the school. Students should NOT exit the vehicle on the street-side of the vehicle. Parents need to remain in their vehicle if using the drop-off or pick-up lanes.

We will have a staggered dismissal schedule again this year, with the final dismissal at 2:45. Parents are welcome to park and meet their student(s) on the playground or utilize the pick-up lanes on both the west and east sides of the school. Once again, parents need to remain in their vehicle if using the drop-off or pick-up lanes.

For student safety, do not park on the crosswalk when dropping off your student(s). Also, please pay attention to No Parking signs. No parking is permitted in the bus lane. These reminders should be shared with family members and friends who will be helping with the drop-off or pick-up processes.

Picture Day is coming!

School Picture Day will take place on Tuesday, August 31. Classroom teachers will send home order packets the first week of school.

We are also seeking volunteers to help on Picture Day. If you would like to help, you must complete the Volunteer Registration Form here. You can also sign up for a time slot here.

Grade-Level Directories

For the 2021-22 school year, we will be providing families with grade-level directories. If you would like to be included on your child’s grade-level directory, please complete this form. Please note, the information you provide will be shared with participating families from every class in your child’s grade. Once we release the directories, we will not provide updates. If you do not complete the form by September 2, 2021 your information will not be included and you will not receive a copy of the directory.

If you choose not to be included, the office cannot provide you with contact information for other students at any point throughout the school year.

Once you receive the directory, please keep it as a reference for birthday party invitations as they cannot be distributed at school. This list will also be your guide for Valentine’s day and other special events. You must complete a separate form for each child.

Lunchroom Volunteers

The school is also looking for lunchroom volunteers. Volunteer shifts are each 50-60 minutes and it's a great way to connect with the students and staff of Sonia Sotomayor! If interested, please complete this form. Volunteers must also complete the Volunteer Registration Form and the Disclosure and Release of Information Authorization as soon as possible.

Annual Updates

If you have not completed the Annual Update for your student(s), we ask that you complete the process as soon as possible. Annual updates must be completed for every child. The update is your chance to register your student(s) and update your contact information. Parents/Guardians should complete the Annual Information Update for each one of their students through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. Please note it is best to complete your registration using a desktop computer or laptop. There have been situations where mobile device registrations have not gone through. Please visit the Parent Portal here to complete the Annual Update.

School Medications

If your student(s) requires medication or a special diet at school, the school requires paperwork signed by a parent and a medical doctor. To start the paperwork process, please call our school nurse, Linda Sutter, at 605-367-4655.

Parents/guardians must deliver any medication in its original labeled container to the school office. Students should not bring medications to school.
