Dear Kincaid Families,
During the past few days it has been wonderful to see the excitement in the building! Staff have been diligently learning a new way of instruction, reviewing the online materials, and organizing their digital classroom for online learning. They would much prefer seeing their students face-to-face, but understand the reasons for the decision to start with on-line instruction. We want all of our staff, students and families to be safe.
Our school start will look very different this year. Here is a timeline of what to expect in the first few weeks of school.
Timeline of Events:
August 17: Open House Message Video Message will be sent to families in an email. The Open House will introduce our staff, our schedule, and expectations for learning.
August 19: You will receive a welcome letter from your child's homeroom teacher. The teacher will provide the time of day and links for zoom meetings for the class.
August 20, 21, 24: Teachers will host virtual classroom sessions twice per day. The purpose of these sessions will be to build the classroom community and cultivate relationships with students and their families. As they build this partnership, teachers will be introducing the learning platforms, expectations and procedures for learning from home. These introductory sessions will be approximately 45 minutes to 1 hour.
August 25-September 4: Twice a day instruction to build digital citizenship, continue to build the classroom community, and provide assessments using iReady. Teachers will be scheduling sessions with their students during the school day to provide the assessment, proctoring through Zoom. The assessment will be required to place students at the appropriate level in the online instruction for ELA and Math for the asynchronous lessons in iReady.
September 7: Labor Day Holiday (No School)
Starting September 8: Students will participate in a minimum of two lessons a day, one in ELA and one in Math via Zoom. In addition to the whole class instruction, teachers will begin to provide a schedule for small group instruction to meet the specific needs of their students. Students who have services in ELL, Special Education, or Migrant Education, will be invited to meet with their teachers and tutors in small group zoom sessions.
Kindergarten: August 20-24: Your teacher will be scheduling individual family meetings. Instruction will begin on August 25. Your classroom teachers will contact you on August 19th to set up appointments.
Supplies for Home
It would be helpful to have paper, pencils, crayons, and possibly scissors handy to create and take photos of the work your child has completed. The Elementary Education division at ASD is working on the plan to disburse student workbooks to our families. When we have a schedule for pick-up of materials you will be notified.
iReady Assessment and Learning Tools
Students in grades K-12 who are enrolled in ASD at School will take a reading and mathematics diagnostic assessment as part of the first few weeks of school. The diagnostic assessments are designed to provide teachers and parents with information about where a student is ready to learn, including areas of strength and concern.
Reading
iReady - Grades K-10, Grades 11-12 Tier III Courses
Mathematics
iReady - Grades K-8
ALEKS PPL – Grades 9-12
The diagnostic assessments are designed to enable personalized, online instruction with lessons based on individualized learning needs to support your student’s learning. Therefore, students must complete the diagnostic assessments independently. Classroom teachers will be providing information and guidance on how to access and complete the diagnostic assessments.
