Book Spotlight- Balloons Over Broadway: The True Story of the Puppeteer of Macy's Parade by Melissa Sweet
In this book you will meet the master puppeteer who invented the first balloons for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Melissa Sweet brings to life the inspirational story of the puppeteer who invented the giant balloons floating in the sky during the annual parade celebrating Thanksgiving. The Caldecott Honor artist brilliantly captures the essence of Tony Sarg, a self-taught immigrant with a fascinating imagination.
The collage illustrations coupled with Sweet’s storytelling portray Sarg’s joy in his childhood inventions and his ingenious balloon creations that still bring delight to viewers around the country. This nonfiction illustrated book will capture the hearts of all ages.

The Trapped Librarian November Lesson Ideas
Meet Kelly Shelton
Kelly Shelton is the librarian at Hillside Academy in Garland ISD.
In her 26 years as an educator, she has spent 7 of those as a librarian. She earned her master's degree in library science from Texas A&M Commerce.
What is the best part about working in a library?
I love that I get to be creative in my lesson planning! I love that students are excited to come to the library. I love that can make dreams come true by getting a student the book they have been waiting for.
What things have you done as a library media specialist that you are most proud of?
I am proud to have created a culture of reading at Hillside Academy. We have a Little Free Library that students can get books from anytime. Students are eager readers at Hillside.
I am blessed to be living my dream as a teacher librarian. Students are eager to tell me what they are reading & ask me about books. Deciding to become a librarian was one of the best decisions of my life, what a gift!
She has a wealth of great ideas (I'm stealing a few from her. lol) and is passionate about being a librarian. Check out her school's website.

DISCOVERY ED – BYTE OF THE MONTH
This month, we want to highlight the “Celebrate Reading” channel. You will find videos, images, reading passages, audiobooks, and more for all grade levels.
Here is the channel’s description: Celebrate reading! Reading is a complex cognitive process in which meaning is derived from the process of decoding symbols. People read to learn language, to share ideas, and to communicate. Access to information through the written word has not always been widely spread. In the past, only a privileged few owned books, gained admittance to libraries or could read. Today, reading is considered a fundamental aspect of education, and public libraries make written materials available to the general population for reference or borrowing.
