Backbone State Park

Enjoy the beauty around you

Backbone State Park was Iowa's first state park. It was founded in 1920 and is still one of Iowa's most beautiful and unique state parks. It is named Backbone because of the steep and narrow ridge of bedrock cut by a loop of the Maquoketa River. This forms the highest point in northeast Iowa which is called the Devil's Backbone.

Richmond Springs

Richmond Springs is located in the park near the flats. Here you can find a short hiking trail that leads above the waterfall. There are two small springs filled with freezing water and trout! The springs lead to a small but beautiful waterfall.
