Ms. Harris' Weekly Update
October 9th-13th
What's Going On This Week:
Ms. Harris' Science: This week we will be reviewing Lesson 1: The Properties of Sound. Students will participate in a lab to see how sound travels through different mediums. We will start Lesson 2 on Wednesday. It covers the property of pitch and how that can be changed through thickness and tension. A quiz over Lessons 1 and 2 will be next Tuesday, the 17th.
Ms. Harris' Social Studies: This week we will start examining two more explorers, Hernando de Soto and John Cabot. Our test over those two plus, La Salle and Hudson will be Friday, October 20th.
Mrs. Thurston's ELA/Math: This week we are continuing our first Lucy Calkins unit, Interpreting Characters: The Heart of the Story, and diving deep into studying characters. We will continue learning how to think deeply about characters while reading our new novel, Tiger Rising. In writing, we are finishing our Realistic Fiction/Narrative unit by drafting and revising with an eye toward believability. We are currently revising/editing our stories and will be done by Wednesday! New spelling words were given today and the spelling test will be on Friday. Corrections (writing 5x each) may be made to receive half credit back. In math, we will continue to learn about factors, multiples, prime and composite numbers! Students should be taking their notebooks home every night to review concepts taught in class. Factors/multiples/prime/composite numbers quiz will be Wednesday.
Ms. Harris' GT ELA/Math: This week students will be exploring different types of folktales. They will be learning a strategy called a literature web to help them analyze and better understand literature. In writing, they will begin drafting their spooky stories. In math this week, we will review multiples and factors. Students will take a quiz over those two concepts on Tuesday. We will then start translating expressions and multiplicative comparisons. Students will also start their first timed tests on Tuesday and Friday of this week.
