Weekly Tech Update 1/11 to 1/15

This isn't March

I am sure Friday’s announcement was always in the back of our minds, we were just hoping to not have to actually hear it. While I am sure that the decision from Ms.LaBarr, Ms. Eger-Converse, and Ms. Lane was not an easy decision, two things immediately came to mind. First, as Ms.LaBarr alluded to with her comment that she was surprised we made it to January, let’s be grateful that we have had four months to get our procedures and expectations in place in case such a decision was ever implemented. Secondly, WE HAVE ALL GROWN AND IMPROVED so much with our skills, strategies, tools, etc. since last spring. It’s night and day comparing this temporary shift of virtual learning to the one that occurred in March. We have added so many useful tools to our toolbox for just this occasion! Three weeks, we got this! If you don’t want to get through it with Lisa, Tara, or myself, get through it with a colleague. It’s always easier when we aren’t going at it alone!

Absence Makes the Heart Grow Fonder

As per the district's request to limit our exposure, I am going to temporarily suspend my rotational schedule. However, I would still like to make myself available at your convenience. Therefore, I have created a sign up on Calendly. Click on the link provided and you can sign up for a 1 on 1 Zoom. Available time slots will be visible, just select a date and time that works best for you. Once you sign up, I will email you a Zoom link for the session. As always, feel free to text, email, or call. Link to sign up: https://calendly.com/60withsaint/30min

Loom and Screencastify

If you wish to use Loom, which has a free account for educators, you MUST verify your educational account or you will be subject to the 5 minute limit on your screen recordings. If you are not sure if you have verified your account, then navigate to Loom, Sign in, click on your profile picture, go to Account Settings, select Workspace, then Plan & Billing. It should show a graduation cap with a "For Education" to the right of it. Click here to Verify Education Account if you have not done so already.

We no longer have free access to the upgraded features of Screencastify as we did in the spring. If you are a Screencastify fan, as I am, then it will cost you $29 to upgrade(click show Education discounts) your account for the unlimited recording. The subscription is good for 1 calendar year. I am not aware of any district plan at this time, so I paid out of pocket. I could certainly accomplish most of the same things with Loom, with a few workarounds, but I use it too much and could justify the cost. I am not encouraging you to purchase this, I am just being honest and letting you know in case you wish to stay with Screencastify.

Focus on Connections

Dr. Catlin Tucker recently blogged "Farewell, 2020: Lessons Learned". While the recent decision to temporarily shift to remote learning may trigger some PTSD, it doesn't have to! Dr. Tucker reflects, and gives strategies, ranging from how to connect with your students during a pandemic to offering ways for increasing engagement and motivation through student agency.

Interested in Making Instructional Videos?

Check out Kareem Farah and Robert Barnett's article in Edutopia titled "A 5-Step Guide to Making Your Own Instructional Videos." It's an easy read with good tips for creating videos. They recommend using a program like Explain Everything, but we can certainly accomplish the same thing with Loom and/or Screencastify. What I found really interesting, is the research on instructional videos published by Vanderbilt University.

5 Tips to Effectively Flip Your Classroom

Although you may not be entirely interested in flipping your classroom at this point and time, Meagan Kelly from I Heart EDU, offers some great advice that can be utilized while planning for virtual instruction.

The Secret Sauce Twitter Challenge Winner

Congratulations to Megan Sudduth for winning an autographed copied of The Secret Sauce by Rich Czyz. Her favorite strategy is the 3 B4 Me strategy because "...it allows Ss to communicate with peers and try to figure out the answer before asking the teacher." You can follow Megan @megan_soapy on Twitter.

I Lost It and Can't Find it

At some point and time, did I lend someone my copy of Ditch That Textbook by Matt Miller? I can't seem to find it anywhere.

Who Got Caught?

Has anyone noticed the new “I Caught” option on the Empower website? If you haven’t, head on over and check it out. The “I Caught…” form is courtesy of the Cyclone Learning Zone. I’m not going to spoil it, you’ll have to check it out. Here’s the link.

Tech Tool(s) of The WEEK

Empower Web Page

I am intentionally not introducing a new tool for the week. Stick to the tools that you are comfortable with and familiar with. There are plenty of resources to help you on the Empower Web Page. If you are looking for something more specific, then contact us and we can help you with your request. A new Tech Tool of the Week will reappear in the near future.

WCSD Informational Technology Website

The Informational Technology(IT) department is establishing a ticketing system to streamline the process of tracking technology issues. The ticketing system can be found using this link. (https://sites.google.com/watertowncsd.org/informationtechnology/home). This should be a website that you bookmark in case you need to reach out to the IT department.

Would you Mind Sharing?

It seems like it's been a year, but we made it through the first 4 months! I have been fortunate to witness colleagues finding their stride and using strategies and techniques that have helped with the start of this unprecedented school year. However, there are colleagues that could use some ideas on strategies and techniques that could help in their transition to this style of hybrid/remote learning. If you are willing to share, please click on the Google Form below so we can compile some strategies that have been effective for you. Just drop a quick note in the Google Form and I will be in touch. THANK YOU!!!

Feedback Welcomed and Encouraged

Jayson St.Croix

Please contact me so we can collaborate on how to integrate more technology into your lessons.
