TONIGHT - INCOMING KINDERGARTEN PARENT INFORMATION MEETING
Tonight we will be offering an informational meeting for parents of incoming kindergarteners. Beginning at 5:30, parents will hear about the registration process, learn about kindergarten curriculum, and meet the teachers. The meeting will be held in the Alta Vista cafeteria. If you have a neighbor with a child that will be attending kindergarten in the fall, please share the flyer attached to this newsletter. Online registration begins on February 1st.
IMPORTANT "REMIND" UPDATE
As many of you know, Alta Vista uses Remind to send important text alerts to families about upcoming events or updates about things happening at school. Remind provides this service free of charge. Unfortunately, due to a new fee imposed by Verizon, effective January 28, 2019, Remind can no longer continue providing free text notifications for devices on the Verizon Wireless network. If you have Verizon Wireless as your phone carrier and currently receive Remind text messages, there is still a way for you to continue receiving information. Download the free Remind app on the iOS App Store, on Google Play, or at rmd.me/a. If you don’t already have a Remind account, create one using the phone number where you receive Remind texts. Make sure to enable push notifications from Remind on your phone. By taking these few steps, you'll never miss an Alta Vista text message.
THE GREAT KINDNESS CHALLENGE
During the week of January 28th, the students and staff at Alta Vista will be participating in The Great Kindness Challenge. This is a global movement in which more than ten million children have done their part to make the world a better place by accomplishing more than half a billion acts of kindness. In addition to make others happy, acts of kindness also have a positive impact on those who participate. It gives students a greater sense of self-worth, increases self esteem, and improves overall mental health. We want to extend the experience beyond the classroom doors. There are many things you can do as a family to spread kindness to friends and family. The Great Kindness Challenge flyer at the bottom of this newsletter includes a checklist of fifty activities that can be done at home by children and adults. An act as simple as holding a door for someone can brighten day. Think about printing out the page, post it on the fridge, and consider it your own family challenge. How many can you accomplish?
