It's Gym Time!
It is absolutely incredible to think we are just a couple of days away from May. You wouldn’t know it from the weather forecast, but spring is in full swing. This is such a great time of year because we emerge from our winter hibernation state and start getting active outside again. I absolutely love hearing all of the sports stories my students bring to me about their lacrosse, baseball/softball, and soccer games. Along with the stories, I get many invitations to check out their sporting events. I am very busy this time of year, but I’m happy to try as long as I get a schedule. Another great part of spring is the planning of field day. This is by far my favorite event of the school year and I welcome parents to join. If you would like to volunteer, please visit the sign-up link. Our lower elementary field day will be on the morning of May 31st. Our upper elementary field day will be all day on June 1st.

The one thing we don’t do in PE is stay still for long. We have been very active all year as we plug through our physical education curriculum. Our last few units have consisted of basketball, gymnastics, pickleball, and now volleyball. I would highly encourage you to ask your student about skills learned and don’t be afraid to play/practice with them at home. I only see them for 70 minutes a week, so the practice they get home is so valuable to becoming proficient with these sports skills.
This past week we started our volleyball skills unit. Unbeknownst to me, half of my volleyballs disappeared since the last time we did our volleyball unit. This didn’t cause me any sleepless nights since these volleyballs were teetering on the edge of going in the trash, but it did cause me to call an audible at the line. I ordered more volleyballs and decided to switch next week from volleyball to our last round of fitness testing to give our volleyballs more time to arrive. In the meantime, this week has seen us use a wide assortment of balls to work on the underhand serve and pass. The students have picked up these skills quickly.
As always, please remember to send your child in athletic shoes on physical education days. As comfortable as Crocs are, they do not count as athletic shoes - even when sport mode is activated. Stay healthy, keep active, and go blue!
