Raureka School Term 1 Week 4
Newsletter 23 February 2022
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Kia ora koutou katoa, Talofa lava, Kia orana,
Thank you to all of the families who came to the meet the teacher meetings last week, this helped us help your child. Please start looking at using the Seesaw app as we will be using that for online learning if we have to isolate in the future.
Congratulations to our new House Captains and Physical Activity Leaders (PAL's). We named them last Friday at our online Assembly.
It is difficult for us to to make the selections as we have a fantastic children who could do the job, unfortunately we are limited by the numbers we can have. We have 10 leaders and 15 PAL's.
Remember to do the best that you can and show everyone why you were selected.
Our Leaders are:
Cultural Addisyn, Some
House Captains:
Whero: Ashton, Thomas
Kowhai: Ben, Edie
Kahurangi: Jessie, Aaysia
Kakariki: Iesha, Spencer
PAL's: Beautiful-Roze, Ciana, Charlie, Lachlan G, Skylah, Manaia, Lashaya, Chazaria, Ngawai, Ruby, Rohan, Harlen, Hannah, Manahi and Lucan.
We had Room 4,5, 11 and 19 Swimming Sports yesterday. The children, from Blue Bubble, were competing as we didn't want to have children from different bubbles mixing. They were fantastic and did their best. This was changed from Thursday because of the terrible weather report. Rooms 1,2, and 3 will have their Swimming Sports next Wednesday.
I am sorry to say that we will be saying farewell to Mrs Putter at the end of this term. Mrs Putter will be moving to Christchurch, as her husband has a new job there. We are really going to miss her and wish her and her family all the best for the move.
We are looking for a replacement teacher for her now, I will let you know who this will be as soon as possible.
Remember if at any time you have a query or issue please contact the class teacher and talk to them. Our teachers want the best for your tamariki.
We have entered Phase 2 of the Covid ResponsePlan- please look on our web page for some further information here is some information that may be beneficial.
Phase 2 — we are in this phase (although we have no cases at Raureka School)
Cases have spread in the community, so we need to minimise and slow transmission to protect our vulnerable communities.
A rapid increase in case numbers means increased requirements for people to self-manage their situation using online tools. This includes people having to report themselves as cases and Close Contacts.
Support will be available for those who do not have access or are not confident using technology. This approach will allow us to focus on managing higher-risk cases and contacts.
Testing
You should get a PCR test for COVID-19, even if you are vaccinated, if you have:
- COVID-19 symptoms
- been identified as a contact
- been at a location of interest at the relevant time.
If you have been tested for COVID-19 for the above reasons, go straight home. You will be notified when the result is available. Test results may take between 2 to 5 days. If you have not got your result after 5 days, contact your doctor or the testing centre where your swab was taken.
If you are having trouble getting a test, call Healthline on 0800 358 5453 or your doctor – they may be able to help you get access to a test.
Rapid antigen tests (RATs) will mainly be used for critical workers that are Close Contacts to determine if they can return to work as part of the Close Contact Exemption Scheme. If they test positive on a RAT, they will need to follow up with a PCR test.

What happens when you get a PCR test
Case investigation and contact tracing
As cases grow, we will use digital technology more. We may communicate using text or email. There will be support for people who do not have access to or are not confident using technology.
Cases will:
- be identified through a positive PCR test
- be notified by text message and given an online contact tracing form that will focus on high-risk exposures — events or locations
- need to self-isolate at home for 10 days.
Household contacts live with someone who is positive and will also need to immediately self-isolate for 10 days. Household contacts will need to get tests on day 3 and on day 8. If all tests are negative, the whole household can complete isolation at the same time.
Close Contacts who are not household contacts will:
- be notified by text, push notification or Bluetooth alert
- need to isolate at home for 7 days from the last time they were exposed to someone with COVID-19
- need to get tested on day 5 after they were exposed to someone with COVID-19 or if symptoms develop
- be ‘tested to return’ for critical infrastructure workers, if needed.
Some people who are Close Contacts and critical workers will still be able to go to work, if they are asymptomatic and have a negative RAT before going to work. Your employer will let you know if this applies to you.
Contact tracing form
If you test positive, you may be sent a text with an access code and link to an online contact tracing form. You will be asked to share:
- symptoms
- details of household Close Contacts
- high risk locations and Close Contacts
- NZ COVID Tracer diary and Bluetooth data.
The online form takes about 30 minutes to complete. You can start this anytime within 24 hours and continue to add information for 3 days. If you do not start it within 24 hours, someone will call to check in.
If you have issues with the online form, you can contact the contact tracing team at the Ministry of Health:
- Email: help@tracing.min.health.nz
- Phone: 0800 177 788
Isolation and quarantine
If you get COVID-19, you will need to isolate for 10 days.
If you are a household contact of someone with COVID-19, you will need to isolate for 10 days with the case and get tested on day 3 and day 8.
If you are a Close Contact, but not a household contact, you will need to isolate for 7 days and get tested on day 5.
There will be extra support in place if a health or critical worker is a contact.
If you are away from home, you will need to build potential isolation time into your travel plans.
If you test positive away from home
Care in the Community — health and social support
People who test positive will be encouraged to use self-service tools where possible to make sure people with the greatest need can get support.
A local care co-ordination hub will support people who need ongoing clinical care.
People with lower clinical risks can contact external health providers.
People who test positive will be supported to isolate in their home, with alternative accommodation available if needed.
Congratulations to our two cricket teams who played on Friday and Saturday. I appreciate the parent support for this. Both teams played really well and were a credit to our school. Please see photos below.
Email addresses:
We require email addresses for both parents. Would you please email the office on office@raureka.school.nz - include your child's name and both email addresses please.
If this could be done as soon as possible, it would be greatly appreciated.
Some parents use the same email address - if that is the case please let us know. Thank you.
If your child is away from school -
Reminder that you need to let the school know if your child is going to be away. Because of the current covid situation, it is essential that you let us know the reason they are away - eg coughing, headache, tummy bug etc.
You can phone either 06 8789766 or o27 557 0085 and leave a message.
Thank you for this, it is so helpful and we want to ensure your child is okay.

· Do your child’s records need updating?
- moved house?
- phone/cellphone numbers changed?
- living arrangements changed?
- emergency contacts changed?
- medical details?
Medical Reminders
IMPORTANT: Children are NOT to carry any form of medication in their bags etc. All medication must be held in the office. Parents must complete a Medical Form to enable staff to administer medication.
We often have a few ‘bugs’ around the school.
· A common one is a nasty cough/flu type illness. Keep your children home if they have symptoms of this as it spreads easily.
· If your child has had vomiting or diarrhoea, they MUST stay home for 2 days after the last event. This illness definitely spreads quickly around the school.
· Headlice are always around so make sure that you check your child’s hair regularly (we suggest weekly) and treat the hair if necessary. We have treatments available from school for free. Just pop in and we can give you some.
· If your child is at all unwell, please keep them home so that they don’t pass bugs on to other children. Also if a child is feeling unwell they are not able to learn easily and are much better off at home snuggled up in bed.
Don’t forget to contact the school office to let us know when your child is unwell please.
Volunteers needed for supervision of our school patrollers.
The children are well trained, it is just a matter of having an adult supervise from 8.30-9.00. Please contact Chris in the school office if your are able to help (even if you have helped in the past, please confirm).
